Chapter 3 — The Truth Everyone Ignored

Outside the ballroom...

Rain began falling across the marble entrance.

Damian hurried after Elena.

"Please."

She stopped.

He had never spoken that word to her before.

"I built those companies."

Elena looked at him for several silent seconds.

"No."

"You managed them."

"There is a difference."

His shoulders collapsed.

"I can fix this."

She almost smiled.

"You've mistaken generosity for dependence."

She reached into her evening bag and removed an old employee badge.

Worn.

Scratched.

Faded with time.

Damian frowned.

"I remember that."

"You should."

"It belonged to the woman who worked late every night while everyone else went home."

"The woman whose ideas you presented as your own."

"The woman you laughed at because she preferred working instead of attending parties."

His face slowly lost its color.

"You..."

"Yes."

"I was already the owner."

"I simply wanted to know who deserved my trust."

"You answered that question years ago."

Rain soaked Damian's tuxedo.

For the first time...

There was no excuse.

No lie.

Only regret.

Behind Elena, dozens of executives walked out of the hotel.

One after another...

They greeted her respectfully.

"Good evening, Ms. Voss."

She acknowledged each of them with a simple nod.

Not one of them even looked at Damian.

His kingdom had vanished...

...without a single argument.
