Chapter 1: The Man Who Shouldn't Have Been There

The silence inside the ballroom felt heavier than the crystal chandeliers hanging above it.

Julian Mercer continued walking forward.

No one stopped him.

Not the security guards.

Not the event organizers.

Not even Alistair Vance.

Because everyone could see something they had never witnessed before.

Fear.

Real fear.

On Alistair's face.

"Mr. Mercer," Alistair finally said, forcing a smile. "I don't believe you're on the guest list."

Julian stopped a few feet away from Elena's wheelchair.

"No," he replied calmly. "But neither is the truth."

Several guests exchanged nervous glances.

The room grew quiet enough to hear glasses being set down.

Alistair's jaw tightened.

"This isn't the place."

"It's exactly the place."

Julian slowly removed a small flash drive from his pocket.

The sight of it drained the color from Alistair's face.

Elena noticed.

For years she had sat through galas, meetings, and interviews feeling disconnected from the world.

But tonight something felt different.

She looked at Julian.

Then at her father.

And for the first time, she saw panic in his eyes.

"What is that?" she asked softly.

Julian's gaze softened.

"The reason your life was stolen."

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Alistair stepped forward.

"Leave now."

Julian didn't move.

"Seven years ago," he said loudly, "Elena's accident wasn't an accident."

The room froze.

Even Elena stopped breathing.

Because somewhere deep inside her mind...

A memory stirred.

A memory she had been told never existed.

And suddenly she remembered rain.

A highway.

A black SUV.

And someone screaming.
