CHAPTER 1: THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL

Vivian Moretti’s wine glass slipped from her fingers.
It struck the marble staircase and shattered.
No one moved.
Alejandro kept his phone pressed to his ear.
“Freeze every personal and corporate account connected to Vivian Moretti,” he repeated. “Cancel her access cards. Lock every vehicle registered under her name. And send security to every exit.”
Vivian’s face lost all color.
“You can’t do that.”
Alejandro slowly lowered the phone.
“I just did.”
Two security guards stepped through the front doors behind him. Vivian glanced toward the hallway leading to the kitchen, but Alejandro moved between her and the nearest exit.
“Stay where you are.”
Vivian forced a laugh.
“This is absurd. That woman is not Elena.”
Alejandro looked at the maid standing beside the fallen bucket.
Her hair was thinner than he remembered. Her face looked pale and exhausted. Yet beneath the fear, he saw the same dark eyes that had watched him exchange wedding vows seven years earlier.
He noticed a faint scar beneath her left eyebrow.
It was the scar Elena had gotten when she fell from a bicycle at twelve.
He took one careful step toward her.
“Elena, look at me.”
She flinched.
Vivian immediately spoke.
“Maria, return to the servants’ quarters.”
Elena’s shoulders tightened at the name.
Alejandro turned toward Vivian.
“Her name is not Maria.”
The quiet authority in his voice silenced the entire foyer.
He removed his overcoat and gently placed it around Elena’s shoulders. When the fabric touched her, she recoiled as though kindness itself had become unfamiliar.
“You’re safe,” he whispered.
Elena stared at him.
Her lips moved, but no sound came out.
Then she looked toward the servants lining the wall.
An elderly housekeeper named Rosa began to cry.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Castillo.”
Vivian’s expression sharpened.
“Be quiet, Rosa.”
Rosa lifted her head.
For the first time in three years, she did not obey.
“She kept Mrs. Castillo in the old west wing,” Rosa said. “Behind the storage room.”
Alejandro turned toward the dark hallway beneath the staircase.
“The west wing was sealed after the electrical fire.”
“That’s what Vivian told everyone,” Rosa replied. “But there was no fire.”
Vivian stepped backward.
“Rosa is confused. She’s old.”
“No,” Elena whispered.
It was barely audible.
But everyone heard it.
Alejandro looked at her.
Elena’s eyes remained fixed on the hallway.
“There was no fire.”
Alejandro offered her his hand.
She hesitated before slowly placing her fingers in his.
Her hand felt cold.
Together, they walked through the mansion.
The servants followed at a distance while security remained beside Vivian.
At the end of the west hallway stood a tall wooden bookcase covered in dust. Rosa reached behind a decorative panel and pressed a hidden switch.
A mechanical lock clicked.
The entire bookcase shifted forward.
Behind it was a narrow metal door.
Alejandro’s chest tightened.
He had lived in the mansion since childhood.
He had never known the door existed.
Rosa entered a code into the keypad.
The door opened.
A cold draft moved through the hallway.
Behind it was a narrow staircase descending beneath the mansion.
Alejandro switched on his phone’s flashlight.
The walls below were unfinished concrete. A camera had been mounted above every landing.
Elena’s grip tightened around his hand.
At the bottom was a small room with no windows.
Inside stood a narrow bed, a metal table, a sink, and a locked medicine cabinet.
Photographs of Alejandro covered one wall.
Some had been cut from newspapers.
Others had been taken inside the mansion without his knowledge.
In several photographs, Vivian stood beside him at charity events and business dinners.
Across every image, someone had written the same sentence in black ink:
HE REPLACED YOU.
Alejandro stared at the words.
“Elena…”
“She showed them to me every day,” Elena said.
Her voice trembled, but she continued.
“She told me you stopped searching. She said you knew I was alive and didn’t want me anymore.”
Alejandro turned toward her.
“I never stopped looking.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Vivian showed me divorce papers.”
“They were false.”
“She showed me photographs of you with her.”
“She attended company events as my financial adviser. Nothing more.”
A painful silence passed between them.
Alejandro wanted to pull Elena into his arms, but he could see that she was still afraid of being touched.
So he remained beside her.
Close enough to protect her.
Far enough to let her breathe.
One of the guards opened the medicine cabinet.
Inside were bottles with Elena’s name printed on altered labels. Some were sedatives. Others were used to create confusion, fatigue, and memory problems.
Beneath them sat a small digital recorder.
Alejandro picked it up and pressed play.
Vivian’s voice filled the room.
“If you try to leave again, Alejandro will pay for it.”
Then Elena’s weak voice answered.
“Please don’t hurt him.”
Vivian laughed softly.
“He already belongs to me.”
Alejandro’s jaw tightened.
The recording continued.
There were dates.
Instructions.
Threats.
Names of employees who had been paid to remain silent.
Then another voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
“Mrs. Castillo’s signature has been copied. The transfer documents are ready.”
Alejandro recognized it immediately.
It belonged to Daniel Mercer.
His family attorney.
The man who had handled Elena’s missing-person case from the beginning.
Alejandro stopped the recording.
For three years, Daniel had stood beside him at press conferences.
Daniel had recommended investigators.
Daniel had controlled every legal document connected to Elena’s disappearance.
And now his voice was on the recording.
Alejandro looked toward Vivian.
She was no longer smiling.
“You didn’t do this alone,” he said.
Vivian raised her chin.
“You have no idea how many people wanted what belonged to you.”
At that moment, Alejandro’s phone rang.
It was the head of corporate security.
“Mr. Castillo, Daniel Mercer just attempted to access the private airport. A jet was prepared under another name.”
Alejandro looked at Elena.
The truth was finally coming into view.
But one question remained.
Why had Vivian kept Elena alive?
Then a security officer pulled a sealed folder from beneath the metal bed.
Across the front were three words:
CASTILLO SUCCESSION PLAN.
Alejandro opened it.
The first page contained a medical authorization form.
The second contained a forged declaration of death.
The third showed a transfer of ownership for the entire Castillo estate.
At the bottom was Elena’s copied signature.
And beside it was a date.
May you like
Tomorrow.
Vivian had planned to complete everything before sunrise.
