Chapter 2: The Secret Emma Refused to Tell

Chapter 2: The Secret Emma Refused to Tell

Nathan drove to the small apartment building where Grace Parker lived.

The contrast between his mansion and the aging brick complex was impossible to ignore.

Peeling paint covered the hallways.

The elevator barely worked.

And outside apartment 3B, he could hear a violent coughing fit.

When Grace opened the door, shock flooded her face.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

Nathan immediately understood why Emma had left school.

Grace looked much worse than the reports suggested.

Her skin was pale.

Her breathing was strained.

And beside the couch sat several unopened medical bills.

“Why didn't you tell anyone?” Nathan asked quietly.

Grace lowered her eyes.

“Because pity doesn't pay hospital bills.”

Nathan entered the apartment.

What he saw explained everything.

Prescription receipts.

Past-due rent notices.

Collection letters.

And tucked beneath them all was a Georgetown University acceptance packet addressed to Emma.

Still unopened.

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

“She gave up her future because of me.”

Nathan remained silent.

“She withdrew from school three weeks ago,” Grace continued. “She got a full scholarship, but it didn't cover housing, books, transportation, or living expenses. Then I got sick. I couldn't work enough hours.”

Her voice broke.

“She started working nights at a diner and cleaning offices after school. Then she stopped going altogether.”

Nathan felt something tighten in his chest.

Emma hadn't abandoned her dreams.

She had sacrificed them.

For her mother.

And she had done it without complaining.

Without asking for help.

Without letting anyone know.

For the first time in years, Nathan felt ashamed of how little he understood the lives of the people who worked for him.

As he prepared to leave, he noticed a framed photograph on the wall.

Emma, age ten, holding a homemade science fair trophy.

Written beneath it in marker were four simple words:

"One day I'll help people."

Nathan stared at the picture for a long time.

Then he made a decision.
