Spring sunlight poured through the gardens of the newly restored Oak House.
Children laughed beneath blooming oak trees.
Families gathered for the grand reopening of the Margaret Whitlock Employee Foundation.
Every dollar stolen from the Oak Fund had been recovered.
Graham added twice that amount from his own fortune.
No employee working under the Whitlock name would ever again choose between medicine and feeding their children.
Inside the ceremony hall...
Claire stood quietly beside Lily.
Chemotherapy had taken her hair.

Lily ran across the lawn carrying her worn stuffed elephant before throwing herself into Graham's arms.

He smiled through misty eyes.

He gently brushed a curl from her forehead.

Claire walked over.
"I almost didn't give her that letter."
Graham shook his head.
"If she hadn't..."
He looked toward the bronze plaque at the entrance.

He turned back to Claire.
"My mother was right."
"About what?"

Claire smiled.
