CHAPTER 2: THE MESSAGE IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

The entire lobby stood frozen.

The little boy sat quietly beside Dale Brennan, holding out the old photograph with both hands.

Dale stared at it.

His face turned pale.

For a moment, he forgot where he was.

The photograph showed a younger version of himself sitting on a motorcycle.

In his arms was a laughing baby.

His son.

Ethan.

The son he had not seen in nearly fifteen years.

Dale's fingers trembled as he unfolded the note attached to the back.

Five simple words.

"Find Dale. He will understand."

Vivian stepped closer.

"Who wrote that?"

Dale swallowed hard.

"I think my son did."

A stunned silence filled the lobby.

Years earlier, after a painful divorce and a family tragedy, Dale had lost contact with Ethan.

The boy's mother had moved away.

Letters stopped arriving.

Phone numbers changed.

Eventually, Dale had no idea where his son was.

For fifteen years he searched.

For fifteen years he found nothing.

Now his son's photograph had somehow appeared in the pocket of a billionaire's child.

Vivian knelt beside her son.

"Where did you get this?"

The boy slowly pointed toward his backpack.

One of the aides opened it.

Inside was a small notebook.

The first page contained a name.

ETHAN BRENNAN.

The second page contained dozens of drawings.

Most were sketches of children who looked frightened, overwhelmed, and alone.

At the bottom of every page was the same sentence.

"Everyone deserves someone who understands."

Dale felt tears forming in his eyes.

Then Vivian's assistant suddenly gasped.

"I know that name."

Everyone turned.

The assistant pulled out her phone.

"Ethan Brennan founded Safe Horizons."

The room erupted with confusion.

Safe Horizons was one of the largest nonprofit organizations helping autistic children and families across the country.

Millions of people knew the organization.

Nobody knew its founder had spent years searching for his father.

And at that exact moment, Vivian received a phone call.

The caller ID displayed a name she had never expected to see.

Ethan Brennan.
