CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET HER MOTHER LEFT BEHIND

The next morning Adrian brought Lily to his estate.

He couldn't explain why.

Only that every instinct told him not to let her out of his sight.

Lily carried a small cloth backpack.

Nothing else.

Inside were only two possessions.

A photograph.

And a sealed letter.

"My mom told me to give this to Adrian Vale if I ever found him."

Adrian stared at the envelope.

His hands shook.

The handwriting on the front nearly stopped his heart.

It belonged to Elena.

The woman he had loved.

The woman he believed had abandoned him.

Slowly he opened the letter.

Inside were words written shortly before her death.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, then our daughter found you.

I never left willingly.

The night I disappeared, someone took me away.

Your business partner Victor Graves discovered I was pregnant and feared losing control of your company if we married.

He threatened our lives.

For years I hid to protect Lily.

Telling you the truth would have put both of you in danger.

Twelve years ago I tried to contact you.

Victor stopped me.

If he learns Lily is alive, he will come for her.

Protect our daughter.

And please know this: I never stopped loving you.

Adrian's vision blurred with tears.

Victor Graves.

His oldest partner.

His closest friend.

The man who had stood beside him for two decades.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The kidnappers.

The panic.

The attempt to take Lily.

Victor knew.

And Victor was trying to finish what he started.

Adrian folded the letter carefully.

Then looked at Lily.

For the first time he allowed himself to say the words.

"I think I'm your father."

Lily stared at him.

Neither moved.

Then she quietly stepped forward and hugged him.

Adrian broke down completely.

Twenty years of grief collapsed in a single moment.

But the battle was not over.

Victor Graves was still out there.
