Chapter 4 – An Unexpected Visitor
Six months later...
The community center had become one of the busiest places in the city.
Free tutoring.
Medical clinics.
Food drives.
Job training.
Every room carried Eleanor Carter's name.
Late one afternoon, the receptionist knocked softly on Lily's office door.
"Someone is here to see you."
Lily looked up.
Vanessa stepped inside.
She wore no designer labels.
No diamonds.
Just a simple navy dress.
She looked older.
Tired.
"I know I don't deserve your time," Vanessa said quietly.
"I came because... I wanted to apologize."
Lily remained silent.
Vanessa continued.
"When I lost everything..."
"...I finally understood how quickly people judge someone they think has no value."
She placed an envelope on the desk.
Inside was a donation.
Every dollar she had earned from selling her engagement jewelry.
"I want this to help someone."
Lily studied her for a long moment.
Then she gently pushed the envelope back.
"If you really want to change..."
"Come volunteer."
"No cameras."
"No publicity."
"Just people who need help."
Vanessa nodded.
The following Saturday...
She arrived at seven in the morning wearing jeans and work gloves.
No one recognized her.
