Chapter 2 — The Signature She Never Saw
Chapter 2 — The Signature She Never Saw
No one spoke.
Not a single guest dared to break the silence that had swallowed the ballroom.
Patricia Whitlock stared at the documents in the venue manager's hands as though they belonged to another world.
"No..." she whispered.
"That can't be right."
The venue manager calmly turned another page.
"The ownership transfer was completed three months ago."
His voice was measured.
"The estate now belongs solely to Miss Clara Mason."
Every eye shifted back to Clara.
She stood quietly in the remains of her wedding gown.
The shredded lace still rested around her feet like fallen snow.
She neither smiled nor celebrated.
She simply looked exhausted.
Andrew stepped forward, disbelief written across his face.
"You... you bought this place?"
Clara shook her head.
"I didn't buy it."
"It was left to me."
The guests exchanged confused glances.
Patricia laughed nervously.
"A family inheritance?"
Clara met her eyes.
"My grandfather built this estate."
"The Whitlocks have rented it for weddings for nearly twenty years."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The venue manager nodded respectfully.
"Mr. Edward Mason requested that Miss Mason remain anonymous until the inheritance was legally finalized."
"He wished to see who valued her for herself."
Andrew's face turned pale.
Months earlier, Clara had suggested holding the wedding somewhere smaller.
She had never insisted on using this estate.
She had never mentioned owning it.
Because she wanted a husband...
Not a man interested in her wealth.
Patricia's breathing became uneven.
She suddenly remembered every insult.
Every cruel remark.
Every dinner where she mocked Clara's modest clothes.
Every time she called her a gold digger.
Every humiliation had been directed at the woman who owned the very floor beneath her feet.
Then the venue manager quietly asked,
"Miss Mason... would you like security to escort Mrs. Whitlock from your property?"
May you like
Every guest turned toward Clara.
The decision belonged to her alone.
