CHAPTER 3 — THE MOST EXPENSIVE SILENCE

Andrew slowly walked toward Clara.

For the first time that evening...

His confidence was gone.

"I didn't know."

Clara looked at him quietly.

"No."

"You didn't want to know."

"I loved you."

She smiled sadly.

"No."

"You loved the version of me that never challenged your mother."

Andrew lowered his head.

His voice cracked.

"We can fix this."

"Please."

Clara glanced toward the officiant.

"The ceremony isn't over."

Hope flashed across Andrew's face.

Then Clara addressed the officiant.

"There will be no marriage today."

Instead...

She picked up the wedding license.

Looked at Andrew one final time.

Then calmly tore it in half.

The paper drifted onto the marble floor beside her ruined dress.

Patricia screamed.

"You ungrateful girl!"

The venue manager immediately stepped between them.

"I'm afraid your reservation has been terminated."

Patricia stared.

"What?"

"The owner has canceled today's event."

Several members of the security team entered the ballroom.

The guests watched as Patricia and Andrew were politely escorted away from the altar they believed belonged to them.

Outside, reporters had already begun gathering.

The leaked recordings were spreading across social media.

By sunset...

Whitlock Investments had lost two major investors.

Three board members resigned.

Andrew's engagement became national news.

Not because of a canceled wedding.

Because millions watched the video of him standing silently while his mother humiliated the woman he claimed to love.

His silence became more expensive than any words he could have spoken.

Weeks later...

The Whitlock family business entered financial restructuring.

Patricia's social circles disappeared almost overnight.

People who once praised her elegance suddenly refused to answer her calls.

Andrew tried writing letters.

Flowers.

Apologies.

Clara returned every one unopened.

Some betrayals arrive too late for forgiveness.
