The tactical team launched two patrol boats from the eastern shore.
The black launch already had a half-mile lead.
Fog thickened above the lake, swallowing its stern light between waves.
Ryan remained on the dock with Claire, Noah, Anna, and Nora while officers secured Grant and Melissa.
Grant watched the pursuit without concern.
He said the contractor knew where to deliver the drive.
Bell asked where.
Grant requested an attorney.
Melissa stepped close to her father despite the officer between them.
She told him Rebecca would hate what he had become.
Grant's face changed at the sound of his former wife's name.
He said Rebecca was dead.
Melissa answered that Evelyn had lied to both of them.
Grant accused Melissa of believing Daniel's manipulations.

If the contractor reached the station, a vehicle could take the drive anywhere.
Bell ordered ground units to intercept.
Claire demanded to go to the vault before Grant's people could reach it.
Anna said the vault was beneath a former courthouse in Albany, more than two hours away.
No digital system recorded its contents.
Only the brass key and biometric plate opened the box.
Melissa interrupted.
She said Grant was lying about copying Noah's key.
The contractor carried the red drive, not the vault key.
Grant wanted them chasing the boat while another team waited at the courthouse.
Bell asked how she knew.

She planned to reach Rebecca before Grant obtained the tape.

Melissa said they should not.

When Claire discovered the accounts, Charles tried to dismantle them quietly because public exposure would destroy the company.
His cowardice gave Evelyn time to commit her.
He wrote that Noah's birth was the point at which he understood silence had become participation.
He protected Noah but still failed to tell Claire.
He asked forgiveness without claiming to deserve it.
The codicil declared that if Evelyn knowingly harmed, confined, or concealed any descendant, her trustee authority ended permanently.
All family shares would transfer to a public-benefit trust governed by independent directors.
Ryan, Claire, Noah, and Oliver would retain financial benefits but no inherited voting control.
Charles had designed the punishment to end the family's private empire.
Grace reviewed a scanned copy remotely.
The document appeared valid but required authentication.
If accepted, neither Evelyn nor Grant could control the shares.
Ryan would also lose permanent family control of Whitmore Medical.
He felt unexpected relief.
The company should never again belong to one frightened household.
Technicians prepared the backup tape.
The format was old but readable through a specialized drive brought from the records company.
The full library video began forty minutes before Charles collapsed.
Rebecca Grant entered first.
She installed the hidden camera and checked its angle.
Charles joined her.
Their conversation had audio.
Charles said Evelyn planned to remove the Blue Ledger that night.
He wanted Rebecca to copy it while he confronted her.

Daniel promised to hide her.

Grant's motive was no longer uncertain.
He killed Charles to preserve Evelyn's system and his own power.
Evelyn then protected him because exposing Grant would expose her delay and the entire Blue Ledger.
Ryan asked technicians to copy the tape immediately.
A federal alert arrived before the copy completed.
The contractor from the lake had escaped the launch at the hydroelectric station.
He abandoned the red drive inside the boat.
The drive was recovered intact.
Melissa's claim about Rebecca's recording could now be tested.
The first file contained Rebecca's voice and a location marker.
She was staying in a federal witness apartment arranged under an old sealed agreement.
The supervising official named in the agreement was Agent Marcus Bell.
