Chapter 2: Truth Has a Longer Memory Than Pride
The party never recovered.
Guests quietly placed untouched desserts back onto the table.
Conversations faded into uncomfortable whispers.
Several people approached Susan one after another.
The woman who had mocked older relatives was the first.
"I... I'm embarrassed."
"I shouldn't have laughed."
Susan gave a small nod.
"It takes courage to apologize."
Then she looked toward Erica.
"It takes even more courage to mean it."
Every eye shifted.
Erica's face burned.
Her confidence had vanished, replaced by panic.
She walked toward David.
"Tell them this is being blown out of proportion."
David shook his head.
"No."
She blinked.
"What?"
"You humiliated my wife's mother."
"You frightened my nephew."
"And I stood there doing nothing."
He inhaled deeply.
"That ends today."
Emily squeezed his hand.
Not because everything had been forgiven.
But because he had finally chosen the right side.
Erica's parents arrived moments later after receiving frantic phone calls.
Instead of defending their daughter, her father looked at the broken wine glass and the stains covering Susan's cardigan.
Then he quietly asked,
"Did you really throw wine in her face?"
Erica hesitated.
"...Yes."
Her father closed his eyes.
"I didn't raise you to confuse wealth with worth."
Without another word, he handed Susan a clean handkerchief.
"I'm deeply sorry."
Susan accepted it with a grateful smile.
"The apology honors you."
May you like
Then she added softly,
"I hope your daughter learns why."
