Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Test
Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Test
Vanessa's knees nearly gave way.
The elegant confidence that had defined her moments earlier vanished beneath the weight of hundreds of horrified eyes.
The elderly woman didn't raise her voice.
She didn't demand an apology.
She simply looked toward the concierge.
"Would you please ask Mr. Harrison to come downstairs?"
The concierge's expression changed instantly.
"Yes, Madam Eleanor."
He bowed.
Actually bowed.
Gasps echoed through the lobby.
Vanessa stared in disbelief.
Mr. Harrison.
The hotel's general manager.
Within seconds, the elevator doors opened.
A distinguished man in his sixties hurried across the marble floor.
The moment he reached the elderly woman, he lowered his head respectfully.
"Mrs. Eleanor Whitmore... I didn't know you were arriving today."
"I would have personally welcomed you."
The lobby erupted into whispers.
Mrs. Eleanor Whitmore.
Founder of the Whitmore Grand Hotels.
The billionaire whose family owned more than forty luxury hotels across three continents.
Vanessa's breathing became shallow.
Her husband...
Daniel Whitmore...
had never once mentioned that his mother occasionally disguised herself before visiting company properties.
Eleanor calmly replied,
"I wanted to see how people were treated when they believed no one important was watching."
Then her eyes settled on Vanessa.
"And now I have my answer."
Vanessa forced a trembling smile.
"There has been a misunderstanding..."
"I was only trying to protect the guests."
Eleanor slowly shook her head.
"No."
"You were protecting appearances."
"You judged a stranger before learning her name."
"And you believed kindness should be reserved for wealthy people."
Every employee lowered their eyes.
Not because Eleanor was angry.
May you like
Because she was disappointed.
That was somehow worse.
