CHAPTER THREE The Empire Khloe Built From the Ruins

Gabriel reached the neonatal intensive-care unit seconds later.

Khloe’s daughter looked impossibly small beneath the clear plastic of the incubator.

Tubes surrounded her fragile body.

Monitors flashed warnings.

A neonatal specialist adjusted the ventilator while two nurses prepared emergency medication.

“Her lungs are collapsing,” the specialist said.

Gabriel scrubbed his hands.

“What do you need?”

“You’re family.”

“I’m also a surgeon.”

The specialist looked at him.

Then nodded.

For the next seven minutes, the world narrowed to numbers.

Heart rate.

Oxygen level.

Blood pressure.

Gabriel forced himself to think like a doctor instead of an uncle.

The baby’s oxygen level continued dropping.

Then, slowly, it climbed.

Seventy-two.

Seventy-nine.

Eighty-six.

Ninety-one.

The warning alarm stopped.

No one celebrated.

They were too afraid to trust the silence.

The specialist finally stepped back.

“She’s stabilizing.”

Gabriel rested both hands against the incubator.

“You’re a Thorne,” he whispered. “We don’t surrender.”

In the recovery wing, Khloe opened her eyes the following morning.

Her throat was dry.

Her body felt heavy.

The first word she spoke was barely audible.

“Baby?”

Gabriel was sitting beside her bed.

He stood immediately.

“She’s alive.”

Khloe closed her eyes as tears slipped down her temples.

“Can I see her?”

“When you’re strong enough.”

“Now.”

Even exhausted, she sounded like herself.

Gabriel helped the nurses prepare her wheelchair.

When Khloe entered the neonatal unit, she placed one trembling hand against the incubator.

Her daughter’s fingers were smaller than the tip of her thumb.

“Hello, Grace,” Khloe whispered.

Gabriel looked at her.

“You already chose a name?”

“I chose it when they told me I might never carry a child.”

Her voice trembled.

“She was always going to be Grace.”

Marcus was released temporarily pending formal charges, but security refused him access to Khloe’s floor.

He sent flowers.

Khloe returned them.

He sent letters.

She left them unopened.

He asked Gabriel to deliver a message.

“I never wanted her hurt.”

Gabriel gave him Khloe’s response.

“Intent does not erase consequence.”

Isabella was charged based on the security footage, witness testimony, and her own messages.

Victoria faced charges for unauthorized access, attempted destruction of security records, and participation in the financial conspiracy.

Marcus’s attorneys tried to separate him from the attack.

They argued that his words had been misunderstood.

They claimed he had only wanted Isabella to end their affair and speak honestly to Khloe.

Then Elaine provided one final recording.

She had accidentally captured it while testing audio equipment near the gala’s private lounge.

Marcus and Isabella were arguing behind a partially closed door.

Isabella’s voice was clear.

What happens if Khloe refuses to sign?

Marcus answered.

Then frighten her. Make her believe staying with me will cost her everything.

Including the baby?

There was a long silence.

Marcus didn’t say yes.

But he didn’t tell Isabella to stay away from Khloe.

Instead, he said:

Just handle it.

That recording destroyed his defense.

Marcus avoided responsibility for physically attacking Khloe, but the financial conspiracy, hidden transfers, and evidence of coercion ended his career.

The board removed him from every executive position.

His assets were frozen during the investigation.

The newspapers that once praised him as the heir to the Thorne empire now printed photographs of him entering court through a side entrance.

Three months later, Khloe entered the Thorne Global boardroom.

She wore a simple ivory suit.

A faint scar remained along her back.

Her daughter was still in the hospital but breathing without a ventilator.

Every director stood as Khloe entered.

Victoria’s chair was empty.

Marcus’s chair had been removed entirely.

Gabriel sat beside Khloe but allowed her to speak first.

“For years,” Khloe said, “this company rewarded silence because silence protected powerful people.”

No one interrupted.

“My husband believed my loyalty made me weak. His mother believed motherhood would make me easier to control.”

Khloe placed her hand on the folder in front of her.

“They were both wrong.”

The board voted unanimously to appoint Khloe chairwoman of Thorne Global.

Her first decision was to create an independent foundation supporting women facing financial coercion, domestic intimidation, and abuse during pregnancy.

Her second decision was personal.

She filed for divorce.

Marcus contested nothing.

At the final hearing, he stood across from her with hollow eyes.

“I did love you,” he said after the judge signed the decree.

Khloe looked at him calmly.

“You loved being forgiven.”

Marcus lowered his head.

“Is there any chance that one day you’ll let me meet Grace?”

“When she’s old enough, I’ll tell her the truth.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It’s the only one you’re entitled to.”

Khloe walked away without looking back.

Isabella accepted a plea agreement after agreeing to testify against Victoria and reveal the location of the stolen company funds.

Victoria received a prison sentence.

Marcus lost his fortune, his reputation, and the family name he had treated as a weapon.

Six months after the attack, Grace finally left the hospital.

Khloe carried her daughter through the main entrance of Thorne Medical Center.

Doctors, nurses, and staff formed two quiet lines along the corridor.

Elaine stood near the doors holding a small bouquet.

Gabriel walked beside Khloe.

Outside, reporters waited behind the barricades.

“Mrs. Thorne!” one shouted. “Do you have anything to say about the people who tried to destroy your family?”

Khloe stopped.

She looked down at Grace sleeping peacefully against her chest.

Then she faced the cameras.

“They didn’t destroy my family.”

Her voice was steady.

“They revealed who never belonged in it.”

She stepped into the sunlight.

Behind her, the hospital doors closed.

Ahead of her stood the company they had tried to steal, the future they had tried to control, and the daughter they had failed to take from her.

Isabella had believed one brutal act would destroy a marriage.

She had been right about one thing.

The marriage was destroyed.

May you like

But Khloe was not.

And the empire that rose from its ruins belonged entirely to her.
