Three weeks later...
The mansion felt completely different.
Sunlight poured through the tall windows.
Fresh flowers replaced the shattered decorations from that terrible day.
The frightened silence was gone.
The staff smiled again.
Laughter echoed through the halls.
The man spent every evening assembling a nursery with his own hands.
He painted the walls.
Built the crib.
Hung tiny stars from the ceiling.
The pregnant woman watched from the doorway.
"You don't have to do everything yourself."
He smiled.
"I missed too much already."
She walked over and rested his hand against her belly.
Right on cue...
The baby kicked.
His eyes filled with tears.
