Chapter 8 - THE MISSING FORTY-SEVEN SECONDS

Detective Price did not send Mara the unedited footage.

He let her watch it once at the station.

That was enough.

The ceiling camera had a clear view of Mat Three.

The audio was imperfect but usable.

The clip began before Hale called the round.

Trent stood behind Mara adjusting his wrist tape.

A man off camera asked whether he wanted a different partner.

Trent shook his head.

"No."

Then he looked toward Mara.

"She needs to learn not to quit early."

Mara felt her stomach tighten.

Hale's voice called for partners to begin.

The next twenty seconds matched Nia's phone video from another angle.

Mara defended.

Trent secured the choke.

Mara tapped his arm.

The first three taps were obvious.

Then her voice came through the ceiling microphone.

"Tap."

Trent did not release.

Mara tapped again.

"I tapped."

Trent tightened his grip.

Hale called his name.

Trent ignored him.

Mara slapped the mat three times.

The sound was unmistakable.

Then Hale rushed forward.

The clip did not end there.

That was the forty-seven seconds Meridian had removed.

After Hale broke Trent's grip, Mara collapsed forward.

Trent stood.

Hale demanded to know what was wrong with him.

Trent said, "She wasn't out."

Hale responded, "She tapped."

Trent said, "She panicked."

Then came the sentence that made Detective Price pause the video.

Trent looked toward someone outside the camera frame and said, "Celeste said not to make a scene unless she actually goes out."

Mara stared at the frozen image.

"What does that mean?"

Price did not speculate.

"We are asking Ms. Ward."

Nia leaned forward.

"Keep playing it."

Price resumed.

Hale ordered Trent off the floor.

Trent mentioned his uncle paying for the academy.

He passed Mara and said, "You just made this expensive."

Then the double doors closed behind him.

Price stopped the video.

Mara looked at him.

"Where was this copy?"

"In the red folder."

"Why?"

"We don't know."

"Who put it there?"

"We don't know."

Nia frowned.

"The incident happened the night before the folder was recovered."

"Correct."

"So somebody copied the full camera video and put it into an eight-year-old folder before the archive room alarm went off."

Price nodded.

Mara understood the implication.

Someone inside Meridian had preserved the current incident before Celeste posted the edited version.

Someone with access knew the video was in danger.

"There is a whistleblower," Mara said.

Price closed the laptop.

"Possibly."

"Who?"

"If I knew, I would not tell you during an active investigation."

Mara sat back.

She wanted to be frustrated.

Instead, she was relieved that at least one person in authority was finally refusing to leak information.

Price slid a form toward her.

"I need you to confirm your earlier account against the video."

Mara read each line before signing.

No shortcuts.

No midnight acknowledgment.

No prewritten conclusion.

For the first time since the choke, the process felt like it belonged to evidence rather than Meridian.

When Mara and Nia left the station, reporters were waiting near the sidewalk.

Someone had leaked that police possessed additional footage.

Microphones appeared before Mara could reach the car.

"Ms. Ellis, did Meridian edit the video?"

"Do you believe Trent Voss intentionally tried to hurt you?"

"Is Raymond Hale responsible for putting you in danger?"

Mara stopped.

Nia whispered, "You don't have to answer."

Mara looked at the cameras.

She thought about Hale's manipulation.

She thought about Trent's arm around her throat.

She thought about Celeste turning both acts into one convenient story.

"Two things can be true at once," Mara said.

The reporters went quiet.

"Raymond Hale had information about Trent Voss that he should have disclosed before pairing us."

"That was wrong."

"Trent Voss also heard me tap and refused to release."

"That was his choice."

"Nobody gets to use one wrong decision to erase another."

She walked away before anyone could ask another question.

By evening, that statement had been replayed on local television and shared thousands of times.

It changed the conversation.

Some people still attacked Mara.

Some attacked Hale.

Some defended Trent.

But a new question began appearing repeatedly.

Why had Meridian posted an edited clip if the full video helped establish what happened?

At 6:20 p.m., Meridian removed its original video statement.

At 6:47 p.m., Celeste issued a new one.

She said the earlier clip had been shortened for privacy and technical reasons.

She denied intentionally omitting material evidence.

She also announced that Trent Voss had voluntarily agreed to pause training until the review was complete.

Nia read the announcement aloud.

"Voluntarily."

Mara looked at her.

"They still won't say suspended."

"Of course not."

Nia shut the laptop.

"That would mean somebody did something wrong."

Mara's phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar local number.

She almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

"Mara Ellis?"

The voice belonged to a young man.

"Yes."

"My name is Owen Mercer."

"I work in Meridian's systems department."

Mara stood.

Nia looked up immediately.

"Why are you calling me?"

Owen lowered his voice.

"Because they're blaming the video edit on me."

Mara switched to speaker.

"Did you edit it?"

"I exported what Celeste told me to export."

"Did you remove the audio?"

"She told me the public version couldn't include student voices."

Nia leaned closer.

"Did she tell you to cut the beginning and end?"

"Yes."

Mara felt her pulse quicken.

"Do you have that instruction in writing?"

Owen did not answer.

"Owen?"

"I have more than that."

He sounded terrified.

"The camera system automatically keeps an export log."

"Every time someone downloads footage, the account, timestamp, and clip range are recorded."

Mara looked at Nia.

"Whose account downloaded the full video?"

"Mine first."

"Then Celeste's."

"Then Gavin's."

Nia whispered, "Gavin was watching it that night."

Owen continued.

"At 1:52 a.m., someone logged in with Raymond Hale's old administrator credentials."

Mara frowned.

"He was at home."

"I know."

"Those credentials were deactivated last year."

"Someone reactivated them for four minutes."

Mara felt a chill.

"Who?"

"That is the problem."

"The system says the reactivation came from Celeste's office computer."

Nia went still.

Mara looked at her.

Celeste had either used Hale's identity or allowed someone to use it.

"Can you prove that?"

"Yes."

Owen's breathing changed.

A door closed somewhere on his end.

"But I can't talk long."

"Why?"

"Security just came to my apartment."

Mara's heart jumped.

"Do not open the door."

"I didn't."

"Call the police."

"I already did."

There was a hard knock in the background.

A man's voice called Owen's name.

Owen whispered.

"They say they need my academy laptop."

Mara looked at Nia.

"Do you have the export logs somewhere else?"

A long pause followed.

Then Owen said, "Yes."

"Where?"

"I sent them to someone I trust."

The knocking became louder.

"Who?"

Owen gave Mara a name she did not expect.

"Leila Grant."

May you like

The call disconnected.
