Chapter 17 - THE HEARING THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO END THEM

By six in the evening, the wedding ballroom had become a hearing room.

The flowers were still there.

The white linens were still there.

The empty wedding chair Portia had fallen into after Alonzo slapped her was still against the wall.

The broken vase had been removed as evidence.

In its place, a numbered marker remained on the marble.

Flora could not look at it without seeing Maisie on the floor.

Portia could not look at it without seeing the envelope.

That difference mattered now.

The emergency trust review had been moved from court to a private judicial conference because the temporary order would expire within forty-eight hours and the parties had requested immediate guidance on preservation of assets.

A retired judge appointed as special master presided remotely on a large screen.

Two independent trustees attended by video.

Three Vale board members sat at the long wedding table.

Detective Warren and Ramirez stood along the wall because the financial dispute had become inseparable from a criminal investigation.

Gideon Shaw sat beside Portia.

Cedric sat at the opposite end of the table.

Alonzo sat beside Flora.

Maisie was upstairs with Nora and a uniformed officer outside the door.

Flora had refused to let anyone connected to Portia enter the floor.

No one argued with her.

Gideon opened the hearing with the confidence of a man who did not yet know Flora had the memory card.

"The question before the trust is narrow."

He looked into the camera.

"Can Cedric Vale and Alonzo Vale safely exercise fiduciary authority while there are credible allegations of kidnapping, coercion, identity fraud, and manipulation by Flora Hart?"

Flora felt Alonzo tense beside her.

The special master raised a hand.

"Mr. Shaw, Ms. Hart is not a fiduciary."

"No, Your Honor."

"Then avoid turning a preservation hearing into character theater."

Portia looked irritated.

Flora almost smiled.

Gideon recovered smoothly.

"Of course."

He submitted the forged bank transfer.

He submitted the old marriage certificate.

He submitted Evan Pike's original statement.

Ramirez quietly handed the special master's clerk a supplemental packet showing that the marriage certificate had been backdated and the bank account had been opened without Flora's verified presence.

Gideon's expression tightened.

"Those questions remain unresolved."

Ramirez spoke from the wall.

"The filing date does not."

The special master looked over his glasses.

"Detective, I will ask if I need testimony."

Ramirez nodded.

"Understood."

Portia whispered something to Gideon.

He ignored it.

Next he presented Cedric's statement from that afternoon.

The statement claimed Daniel Mercer intercepted Cedric near the old warehouse.

It claimed Tomas was separated from him.

It claimed Gideon later rescued Cedric after receiving an anonymous location tip.

Flora watched Cedric while Gideon read it.

Cedric stared at his hands.

He did not look at Gideon once.

The special master addressed him directly.

"Mr. Vale, is that your statement?"

Cedric raised his head.

"It is what I signed."

Gideon looked at him sharply.

The special master noticed the wording.

"That was not my question."

Cedric swallowed.

"It is my signature."

"Is the statement true?"

Silence expanded across the ballroom.

Portia leaned forward.

"Cedric."

The special master frowned.

"Mrs. Vale, do not coach the witness."

Portia sat back.

Cedric looked at Alonzo.

Then at Flora.

Then at Detective Warren.

"No."

Gideon closed his eyes.

Portia went white.

The special master leaned toward his camera.

"Which part is untrue?"

Cedric took a slow breath.

"Daniel Mercer did not take me."

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Gideon stood.

"Cedric, I strongly advise you to stop speaking until we have discussed privilege."

Cedric looked at him.

"You do not represent me."

"You signed a representation acknowledgment this afternoon."

"After you told me Tomas would disappear permanently if I did not."

Every voice in the room died.

Warren stepped forward.

Gideon stared at Cedric.

"That is false."

Cedric's face hardened.

"You have been telling me that for twelve years."

Portia stood.

"This hearing is compromised."

The special master raised his voice.

"Sit down."

Portia did not.

"There is an active criminal investigation and Cedric is clearly confused."

"Sit down, Mrs. Vale."

She slowly obeyed.

Flora felt Alonzo's fingers close around hers under the table.

Cedric continued.

"Gideon's contractors blocked our car after we left Briar Storage."

"Our?" the special master asked.

"Mine and Tomas Reed's."

"Where is Mr. Reed?"

Cedric looked toward Detective Warren.

"I do not know."

Gideon spoke without standing.

"There is no evidence these alleged contractors worked for me."

Ramirez moved toward the laptop connected to the ballroom display.

"There is now."

She looked at the special master.

"With permission, we have video relevant to the witness's statement."

The special master nodded.

Ramirez played the memory-card footage.

Cedric's car appeared on the screen.

Tomas's body camera captured the road ahead, the blocking vehicle, and the black sedan behind them.

Then the audio played.

"Mr. Vale, Mr. Shaw wants the ledger."

The sentence echoed beneath the chandeliers.

Portia stared at Gideon.

Not with surprise.

With fury.

Flora saw it immediately.

Portia was not angry because Gideon had done something behind her back.

She was angry because he had been careless enough to be recorded.

Gideon stood.

"Anyone can say my name on a recording."

Ramirez nodded.

"Correct."

She clicked to the second file.

Cedric's whispered voice filled the ballroom.

"If Flora finds this, tell Alonzo that Gideon has the third page."

Gideon stopped breathing.

Then his own voice played.

"Cedric, are you ready to sign?"

The file ended.

No one moved.

The special master stared at Gideon through the screen.

"Mr. Shaw, are you the second voice?"

Gideon looked at Portia.

She did not look back.

"I cannot authenticate a recording in real time."

"That was not my question."

"It resembles my voice."

"Is it your voice?"

Gideon hesitated.

"Yes."

Alonzo leaned back slowly.

The first wall had cracked.

Warren stepped toward Gideon.

"Where is Tomas Reed?"

Gideon's expression returned to professional calm.

"I do not know."

"Where did you hold Cedric Vale?"

"I did not hold him."

"Why were you asking whether he was ready to sign while he believed Tomas was in danger?"

"I reject the premise."

Cedric slammed his palm on the table.

"You showed me a live photograph of Tomas tied to a chair."

Flora felt her stomach twist.

Warren's face hardened.

"Where?"

"On Gideon's phone."

Gideon remained still.

Warren extended his hand.

"Give me the phone."

Gideon looked at him.

"Do you have a warrant?"

"Not yet."

"Then no."

Warren nodded once.

"Understood."

He turned away and spoke quietly into his phone.

Gideon sat down.

He was trying to look calm.

Flora saw a muscle moving in his jaw.

The special master addressed Cedric again.

"What were you asked to sign?"

Cedric looked toward the sealed folder in front of Gideon.

"A confession."

"To what?"

"Misappropriating foundation assets."

Portia closed her eyes.

Cedric continued.

"The confession says I created the shell transfers, used Daniel Mercer to move the money, paid Claire Hart to hide it, and later recruited Flora through Alonzo to recover control."

Flora stared at Gideon.

The story was monstrous in its completeness.

It turned every honest person into a conspirator and every conspirator into a witness.

The special master looked at Gideon.

"Do you possess such a document?"

Gideon folded his hands.

"I possess a historical statement signed by Cedric."

Cedric shook his head.

"Not historical."

Gideon looked at him.

"The underlying admission is twelve years old."

Alonzo stood.

"What admission?"

Gideon did not answer him.

The special master did.

"Produce the document."

Gideon opened his folder.

He removed two pages.

Cedric visibly recoiled.

The first page was new.

The second was old.

Very old.

Cedric's signature appeared at the bottom of both.

Gideon handed copies to the clerk and parties.

Flora read the older page.

It was dated eleven years and ten months earlier.

Two months after Lenora's death.

Cedric acknowledged authorizing transfers from foundation accounts into four temporary holding accounts without full board approval.

One holding account belonged to Claire Hart.

Cedric acknowledged backdating meeting minutes to make the transfers appear authorized.

He acknowledged instructing staff not to disclose the action publicly.

Flora looked at him.

"You did that?"

Cedric nodded.

Alonzo stared at his father.

"You forged board minutes."

"Yes."

"After Mom died."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Cedric closed his eyes.

"To move the money out of accounts Portia and Gideon could reach."

Gideon laughed once.

"There it is."

Cedric looked at him.

"You told me the only way to stop the transfers was to reverse them before settlement."

"And you agreed."

"Because I still believed you were trying to repair what you had done."

Gideon shook his head.

"You signed the instructions."

Cedric's voice rose.

"After you told me Lenora's foundation would collapse if I froze the transactions publicly."

Portia finally spoke.

"Cedric, stop."

He turned toward her.

"No."

She stared at him.

"You have no idea what you are doing."

"For the first time in twelve years, I do."

Portia's face tightened.

The special master reviewed the old admission.

"Mr. Vale, whether your purpose was protective or not, this appears to describe serious fiduciary misconduct."

Cedric nodded.

"It does."

Alonzo looked at him.

"You knew this could destroy you."

Cedric met his son's eyes.

"That is why Portia controlled me."

Portia stood again.

"I did not control you."

Cedric laughed sadly.

"You reminded me of that page every time I tried to reopen the audit."

"Because reopening it would expose you."

"Exactly."

Portia seemed not to hear what she had just admitted.

Flora did.

Ramirez did.

The special master did.

Portia realized it a second too late.

"I mean I warned him."

Cedric looked at her.

"You blackmailed me."

"I protected you."

"No."

Cedric's voice was suddenly steady.

"You protected your leverage."

The words landed harder than any shout.

Then a phone rang at the back of the ballroom.

One of Warren's officers answered.

He spoke quietly for a few seconds.

Then he crossed the room quickly.

"Detective."

Warren stepped aside with him.

Flora watched their faces.

Something had changed.

Warren returned to the table.

"We found Tomas Reed."

Alonzo stood.

"Where?"

"An unused records annex owned by Shaw Legal Risk Services."

Every eye moved toward Gideon.

His face remained still.

"Is he alive?" Flora asked.

Warren nodded.

"Yes."

The relief in the room was immediate.

Cedric bent forward and covered his face.

"Is he okay?"

"Dehydrated and shaken, but conscious."

Warren looked at Gideon.

"He identified two men who work for a security contractor retained by your firm."

Gideon stood.

"I am ending my participation in this hearing."

The special master leaned toward the camera.

"Sit down, Mr. Shaw."

Gideon picked up his briefcase.

"You have no authority to detain me."

Warren stepped in front of him.

"The judge may not."

He held up his phone.

"I now do."

Gideon's eyes narrowed.

"On what basis?"

"A warrant authorizing seizure of your devices and detention for questioning regarding unlawful restraint, evidence tampering, and conspiracy."

Portia went pale.

Gideon slowly set his briefcase on the table.

For one second, Flora thought it was over.

Then Gideon smiled.

It was the first genuine smile she had seen from him.

"You are all still missing the most important document."

Alonzo stared at him.

"The third page."

"Yes."

"Cedric said you have it."

Gideon looked at Portia.

"I had it."

Portia's eyes widened.

Flora felt another trap opening.

"Where is it now?"

Gideon looked directly at her.

"Ask Portia why she needed it more than she needed the sixty million dollars."

Portia stood so fast her chair fell backward.

"Do not say another word."

Warren moved between them.

Gideon laughed softly.

"There."

He looked at Flora.

"That is the face you should have been watching from the beginning."

Flora stepped closer.

"What is on the page?"

Gideon lowered his voice.

"Not just my name."

Portia lunged toward him.

An officer caught her before she reached him.

Gideon continued.

"Not just hers."

Cedric stood.

"Stop."

Gideon looked at him with cold satisfaction.

"You see?"

Then he turned back to Flora.

"Portia was never protecting herself from that page."

He nodded toward Cedric.

May you like

"She was protecting him."
