Chapter 6 - THE UNCLE WHO SOLD A CHILD

Marcus Reed was arrested before sunrise.

Police found him in a private garage beneath his Manhattan office.

His car contained two passports, eighty thousand dollars in cash, and a ticket for a charter flight leaving from Teterboro Airport.

He claimed the travel documents were connected to confidential clients.

He claimed the cash was for an emergency settlement.

He claimed his DNA on the pendant came from handling old family evidence years earlier.

Detective Mills did not believe him.

Julian wanted to confront him immediately.

The district attorney refused.

Marcus had requested counsel and invoked his right to remain silent.

For twelve hours, he said nothing.

Then Julian made a decision.

He entered the interrogation room without permission.

Mills attempted to stop him.

Julian closed the door.

Marcus sat behind a metal table in a gray suit.

His silver hair remained perfectly combed.

Only the absence of his expensive watch suggested his life had changed.

Julian stood across from him.

“You are my biological father.”

Marcus looked at the mirrored wall.

“I assume someone is listening.”

“They are.”

“Then you should leave.”

Julian sat.

“I spent my childhood believing my father was a stranger who died before I was born.”

“You spent your childhood with every advantage this world could offer.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only one that matters.”

Julian leaned forward.

“My mother was your sister.”

Marcus’s expression tightened.

“That was the story.”

“What does that mean?”

“Rebecca was not my sister.”

Julian waited.

“She was my wife.”

The words struck with brutal force.

Marcus finally looked at him.

“We married secretly.”

“My father would have disowned me if he knew.”

“Rebecca worked for the Vales.”

“She came from nothing.”

“And you came from a family that believed money could turn cowardice into dignity.”

Marcus accepted the insult without reacting.

“She became pregnant with you.”

“I planned to leave my family.”

“Then Richard offered me a position as corporate counsel.”

“He promised wealth.”

“Influence.”

“A future.”

“What did he ask for?”

“My loyalty.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“You mean your silence.”

“At first, there was nothing to be silent about.”

“Richard was ambitious.”

“He moved money between companies.”

“He bribed officials.”

“Every successful man in that era operated near the line.”

“He crossed it.”

“Yes.”

“When did Rebecca discover the kidnapping plan?”

Marcus looked down at his hands.

“Two weeks before Amelia disappeared.”

“She overheard Richard speaking with Lieutenant Pierce.”

“What did Richard want?”

“Amelia removed until the trust expired.”

“Why not kill her?”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Richard said he wanted no blood.”

“That lie helped me sleep for years.”

“He planned to place her with a family in Canada under another name.”

“When she turned thirty, the trust would classify her as missing and transfer permanent control to Vivian’s spouse or his estate.”

Elena listened through the observation-room speaker.

Vivian stood beside her.

Rosa sat in a wheelchair near the wall.

Mills had allowed them to hear the confession because Julian had entered before they could stop him.

Inside the room, Julian remained unnaturally calm.

“What was Celeste’s role?”

“She hated Vivian.”

“Richard knew it.”

“He convinced her that Vivian had stolen the life Celeste deserved.”

“Celeste arranged access to the nursery.”

“She changed the staff schedule.”

“She sent the guard away from the east gate.”

“Did she know Amelia would live?”

“She believed the child would be taken to Canada.”

“Was she?”

Marcus shook his head.

“Rebecca interfered.”

“She took Amelia from the man Richard hired.”

“She called Thomas Hart.”

“Then why did you give me to Richard?”

For the first time, Marcus looked ashamed.

“Rebecca came to me before she went to the chapel.”

“She begged me to take you and disappear.”

“I promised I would.”

“But Richard found me first.”

“He said Rebecca had kidnapped Amelia.”

“He said she had become unstable.”

“You believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

Marcus’s voice became quieter.

“Believing him allowed me to protect my career.”

“Rebecca died because you protected your career.”

“Yes.”

The single word seemed to hollow the room.

Julian’s hands curled into fists.

“Did you kill her?”

“No.”

“Did you know Richard would?”

“No.”

“Did you suspect it?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Julian stood so quickly the chair struck the wall.

Mills entered the room.

“That is enough.”

Julian remained over Marcus.

“You watched Vivian raise me.”

“You attended every birthday.”

“You taught me to drive.”

“You stood beside me at graduation.”

Marcus looked up at him.

“I loved you.”

“Do not use that word.”

“I did.”

“You sold my mother.”

“I made a choice I have regretted every day.”

“You did not regret it enough to tell the truth.”

Marcus’s face changed.

“Truth does not restore the dead.”

“No.”

Julian stepped back.

“But it can protect the living.”

Mills placed handcuffs on Marcus.

“Where is Richard Vale?”

Marcus looked toward the mirror.

“He will not be found unless he wants to be found.”

“Where is Celeste?”

“With him.”

“Why did they return?”

“For Amelia’s inheritance.”

Mills glanced toward Elena through the glass.

“What happens on her thirtieth birthday?”

“At midnight, control of the original Vale trust transfers automatically.”

“To Amelia?”

“To the person recognized by the trust’s private registry.”

“What does that require?”

“The jade pendant.”

“A DNA record.”

“And a voice authorization using a phrase selected by Vivian when Amelia was born.”

Vivian moved closer to the speaker.

“I don’t remember any phrase.”

Marcus seemed to hear her through the wall.

“Richard counted on that.”

“What happens if someone uses the pendant and a falsified DNA record?”

“They can register another claimant.”

“Who?” Julian asked.

Marcus did not answer.

“Celeste’s child,” Elena said through the intercom.

Marcus’s head turned toward the sound.

Vivian stared at Elena.

“The infant everyone believed died,” Elena continued.

Marcus’s silence confirmed it.

Mills pressed the intercom.

“Did Celeste’s child survive?”

Marcus looked at the table.

“Yes.”

“Where is that child now?”

“I do not know.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“Richard moved the baby.”

“Celeste spent years searching.”

“She believed Vivian arranged the infant’s death.”

Vivian looked horrified.

“I was told the baby was stillborn.”

“So was Celeste.”

Marcus’s voice came through the speaker.

“Richard lied to both of you.”

Elena looked at Vivian.

“Why would he take Celeste’s baby?”

“To create a replacement heir,” Marcus said.

“If Amelia was ever found, Richard wanted another claimant with Vale blood.”

Julian frowned.

“Celeste and Vivian are sisters.”

“Celeste’s child could appear genetically connected to the family.”

“Not as Vivian’s daughter,” Mills said.

“With falsified records and the pendant, the trust’s private registry could be deceived long enough to transfer control.”

“Who is the child?” Vivian asked.

Marcus’s mouth tightened.

“I never knew the name.”

Mills placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Richard and Celeste at the airport.

“You knew enough to help them enter the country.”

Marcus did not deny it.

“Why was your DNA on the pendant?” Julian asked.

Marcus looked at him.

“Because I took it from Elena during the blackout.”

Elena felt Rosa’s hand close around hers.

“Who hit you?”

“No one.”

“You staged the injury.”

“Yes.”

“Why return the pendant?”

“Richard needed Elena to bring it to the estate.”

“He wanted the hidden passage opened.”

“Why?”

“There was something beneath the house that only the pendant’s metal clasp could release.”

Julian looked toward the observation window.

“What?”

Marcus’s eyes filled with fear.

“A vault Rebecca sealed before she died.”

Mills stepped forward.

“What is inside?”

“I don’t know.”

“Richard believes it contains the original ledger.”

“Then why wasn’t it found when police entered the underground room?”

“Because the gas device was not the lock.”

“The chair was.”

Rosa lifted her head.

The chair where she had been tied remained in police custody.

Mills immediately called the evidence unit.

No one answered.

He called again.

A uniformed officer entered the observation room.

“Detective, we have a problem.”

“The evidence transport carrying the chair was intercepted.”

“By whom?”

“Two men posing as federal agents.”

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

Julian opened the interrogation-room door.

Marcus stood behind Mills.

His face had lost all color.

“They have the vault key now.”

Elena looked at him.

“What else was hidden inside that chair?”

Marcus swallowed.

“A recording made by Rebecca.”

“What does it say?”

“I heard only the first sentence.”

Julian stepped toward him.

“What sentence?”

Marcus looked at his son.

May you like

“Richard did not order Amelia’s kidnapping alone.”

“Vivian did.”
