CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE MARRIAGE

The Whitmore board called an emergency meeting at eight o’clock the next morning.
By seven forty-five, television crews had gathered outside the company’s glass headquarters.
Reports of frozen accounts, suspended projects, and an internal investigation had spread overnight.
Margaret entered through the underground garage, hiding behind dark glasses.
Nathan followed her.
Neither of them had slept.
“We need Elena,” Nathan said as the elevator rose. “If she asks her father to stop this, he will.”
Margaret turned sharply.
“You should never have married her.”
Nathan stared at his mother.
“You were the one who introduced us.”
“I introduced you to a quiet woman with no social connections. I thought she would be obedient.”
The elevator doors opened.
Every board member was already seated.
At the far end of the room sat Victor Hale.
Elena sat beside him.
She wore a tailored cream suit and a newly fitted prosthetic leg. Her posture was straight, her expression controlled.
A lawyer placed several folders on the table.
Margaret stopped walking.
“This is a Whitmore board meeting.”
Victor folded his hands.
“Not anymore.”
The company’s attorney cleared his throat.
“Under the terms of yesterday’s refinancing agreement, Northbridge Capital acquired fifty-one percent of Whitmore Holdings after the company failed to disclose several material liabilities.”
Nathan looked at his mother.
“What liabilities?”
Margaret said nothing.
The attorney opened the first folder.
“For the past four years, Mrs. Whitmore has diverted company money into private accounts, used employee pension funds as collateral, and concealed more than eighty million dollars in debt.”
Nathan’s face went blank.
“That’s impossible.”
Elena slid a report across the table.
“I reviewed the records myself.”
Nathan looked at her.
“You investigated my family?”
“No,” Elena replied. “I tried to protect it.”
She explained that three months earlier, she had discovered irregular transfers while helping Nathan prepare a charitable foundation proposal.
At first, she believed they were accounting errors.
Then she found shell companies controlled by Margaret.
Elena had quietly warned Nathan that the business was unstable, but he dismissed her concerns.
“You told me I didn’t understand how real companies worked,” Elena reminded him.
Nathan lowered his eyes.
Margaret struck the table with her palm.
“This has nothing to do with what happened at the ballroom.”
“It has everything to do with it,” Elena said.
Everyone turned toward her.
“For months, I kept hoping you would show some decency. I thought that if I helped stabilize the company, Nathan and I could build a life away from your cruelty.”
Her voice trembled, but she continued.
“Last night, you proved that saving this company would only give you more power to hurt people.”
Margaret leaned forward.
“You think one embarrassing moment gives you the right to steal my family’s legacy?”
Elena looked directly at her.
“No. You destroyed your legacy long before last night.”
Victor nodded to the lawyer.
A second folder was opened.
It contained photographs, financial records, and sworn statements from former Whitmore employees.
Margaret’s cruelty had not begun with Elena.
A hotel manager had been fired after requesting medical leave.
A housekeeper had been threatened into silence after witnessing financial misconduct.
Several employees had lost their retirement savings because Margaret had used the pension fund to cover private debts.
Nathan stared at the pages.
“You knew about this?” he asked his mother.
“I did what was necessary to protect our name.”
Nathan slowly pushed his chair away from the table.
“Our name?”
Margaret’s composure finally cracked.
“Everything I did was for you!”
“No,” Nathan said. “Everything you did was for yourself.”
He turned toward Elena.
For the first time, there was no arrogance in his face.
Only shame.
“I should have defended you.”
Elena’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
“I was afraid of losing my family.”
“You lost me when you watched your mother humiliate me and asked me to stay quiet.”
Nathan swallowed.
“Can we fix this?”
Elena removed her wedding ring and placed it on the table.
The small sound of metal touching wood seemed final.
“No.”
Margaret stood abruptly.
“This marriage made you a Whitmore.”
Elena rose as well.
“No, Margaret. It revealed what the Whitmores had become.”
The lawyer announced the board’s decision.
Margaret was removed as chief executive officer, effective immediately.
Her company shares were seized under the fraud provisions of the refinancing agreement.
The evidence would be turned over to federal investigators.
As two officers entered the boardroom, Margaret looked at Victor.
“You planned this.”
Victor’s expression did not change.
“I prepared for the possibility.”
Then he glanced at Elena.
“But the final decision belonged to my daughter.”
Margaret turned toward Elena with pure hatred.
“You destroyed us.”
Elena’s answer was quiet.
“No. I simply stopped protecting you from the consequences.”
The officers escorted Margaret from the room.
But as she reached the door, one of the board members received a message and went pale.
“There’s another problem,” he said.
Nathan looked up.
“What now?”
The man turned his laptop around.
A live news report filled the screen.
A former Whitmore employee had released a recording from the ballroom.
The entire world could now hear Margaret’s voice as she mocked Elena and removed her prosthetic leg.

Within minutes, every Whitmore hotel reservation system began filling with cancellations.
Their public downfall had only just begun.
