Chapter 3: The Envelope

Daniel reached for the sealed envelope.

Emma did not stop him.

His fingers tore it open with more force than necessary.

Inside was a printed photo.

His face changed before anyone else saw it.

The confidence drained out of him.

His sister leaned forward.

“What is it?”

Daniel folded the paper quickly, but Jonathan was already speaking.

“That envelope contains evidence of private financial transfers made from the foundation account to a separate company registered under another name.”

Daniel’s father, Richard Carter, slowly lowered his fork.

“What company?”

Daniel said nothing.

Emma answered.

“The one Daniel used to fund the apartment he told me didn’t exist.”

A terrible silence spread around the table.

Margaret’s eyes darted to Daniel.

“Tell me that isn’t true.”

Daniel’s jaw flexed.

“You don’t understand what she’s doing. She’s trying to destroy me.”

Emma’s eyes did not shake.

“No. I’m leaving you. You destroyed yourself.”

Daniel stood suddenly.

“You think these people will choose you over me?”

Emma looked around the table.

For years, these people had watched her shrink.

They had seen the way Daniel dismissed her.

They had laughed awkwardly when he insulted her.

They had accepted her silence because it made dinner easier.

Now no one looked comfortable.

And that was exactly why Emma had chosen this night.

Because Daniel needed witnesses.

Not to humiliate him.

To make sure he could never rewrite the story again.

Richard Carter slowly stood.

“Daniel,” he said, his voice low, “sit down.”

May you like

Daniel froze.

It was the first time anyone in his family had corrected him in front of her.
