Chapter 16 - THE BOARDROOM HOSTAGE

Golden Crown headquarters occupied forty-two floors above Park Avenue.

Thomas chose the building deliberately.

It belonged to the Hale family.

It represented everything he believed had excluded him.

Everything Elias Hale refused to give him.

Everything Lucas tried to protect.

By the time Noah arrived, police had sealed three blocks.

Employees were evacuating.

Vivian’s executive floor remained locked.

Thomas controlled the private elevator system.

Security cameras had gone dark.

Noah stood inside the mobile command center with Agent Kim.

“Is Vivian alive?”

“We don’t know.”

“The gunshot?”

“No injury confirmed.”

Noah looked toward the tower.

“Thomas wants the drive.”

“We’re not giving him the original.”

“He’ll know.”

“We can create a copy.”

“He knows the system.”

“Then we give him enough.”

Mia remained at the hospital with Emma.

She hated being separated.

But her daughter still needed intensive care.

Noah called her.

“You should focus on Emma.”

“I am.”

“You’re also watching a hostage operation.”

“Yes.”

He almost smiled.

Mia asked, “What is Thomas actually trying to do?”

“Destroy the drive.”

“No.”

Mia thought.

“If that were all, he could have disappeared.”

“What else?”

“He wants control of the story.”

Noah understood.

Thomas had lived through identity.

Narrative.

Records.

If he could discredit the Cathedral evidence, he might create enough legal uncertainty.

Especially if he could force Vivian to confess to everything.

Make her the mastermind.

Dead men and compromised witnesses would carry the rest.

“Vivian is his scapegoat.”

Mia said.

Noah looked toward the tower.

“Yes.”

Thomas called.

“Come upstairs.”

“No.”

“Then Vivian dies.”

“Let me hear her.”

Vivian came on.

“Noah.”

She sounded breathless.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“The gunshot?”

“He fired into the wall.”

Thomas took the phone.

“You have ten minutes.”

Noah looked at Agent Kim.

The tactical team prepared.

Thomas expected Noah.

That could be used.

Noah entered with a decoy drive.

A transmitter hidden beneath his shirt.

Police tracked his movement.

The executive floor looked empty.

Broken glass near reception.

A bullet hole in the wall.

Noah entered the boardroom.

Vivian sat in a chair.

Hands bound.

Thomas stood behind her.

For the first time, Noah saw his uncle face to face as an adult.

Thomas looked almost ordinary.

That disturbed him most.

No monstrous expression.

No madness.

Gray hair.

Tailored jacket.

Cane.

Silver handle.

The same cane Scarlett saw at the marina.

Thomas smiled.

“Noah.”

Noah placed the drive on the table.

“Let her go.”

Thomas shook his head.

“First the password.”

“No.”

“Noah.”

“Release Vivian.”

Thomas rested one hand on her shoulder.

“She caused more damage than you understand.”

Vivian looked away.

“You killed Lucas.”

Thomas’s face remained calm.

“Lucas killed himself by refusing to understand reality.”

Noah felt rage surge.

He controlled it.

“You sedated him.”

“Yes.”

“You watched him drown.”

“He could have survived if he stopped fighting.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

Thomas continued.

“Your brother believed morality could defeat structure.”

“He was right.”

Thomas laughed.

“He is in the ground.”

“And your evidence is in federal custody.”

The smile disappeared.

Noah leaned forward.

“You lost.”

Thomas’s hand tightened around the cane.

“You think this drive matters?”

“It proves your medical manipulation.”

“It proves access.”

“Biometric access.”

“Systems can be forged.”

“Voice prints.”

“Generated.”

“Financial signatures.”

“Stolen.”

Noah almost smiled.

Mia was right.

Thomas needed narrative.

He intended to deny everything.

Thomas looked at Vivian.

“Tell him.”

She remained silent.

“Tell him who created Project Cathedral.”

Vivian whispered, “You did.”

Thomas struck the table with the cane.

“Tell him.”

Vivian looked at Noah.

Then something changed in her face.

For decades, fear controlled her.

Now perhaps she had nothing left to protect.

“Thomas created it.”

He stared.

Vivian continued.

“I helped him.”

Noah listened.

“Grant financed parts.”

“Richard hid it.”

“Walsh changed medical records.”

“Arthur covered Lucas’s death because Thomas threatened Noah.”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“Vivian.”

She looked at him.

“But Thomas ordered everything.”

For the first time, she smiled.

“You always did hate being left out of credit.”

Thomas slapped her.

Noah moved forward.

Thomas raised a gun.

“Stop.”

Noah stopped.

Police heard everything through the transmitter.

Confession.

Names.

Roles.

Thomas had lost control of the narrative without realizing it.

Vivian laughed.

“You’re finished.”

Thomas looked at Noah’s collar.

He saw the slight outline.

Transmitter.

His face changed.

“You.”

He fired.

Noah dropped.

The bullet struck the table.

Tactical officers breached simultaneously.

Glass shattered.

Smoke.

Shouts.

Thomas grabbed Vivian and dragged her toward the private office.

Noah followed behind officers.

Thomas fired twice.

Police returned fire.

He disappeared through a hidden executive passage.

Of course.

The building had old service routes.

Thomas knew them.

Vivian collapsed near the doorway.

Alive.

Noah reached her.

“Where did he go?”

She gasped.

“Roof.”

Police raced upward.

Thomas reached the helipad.

A helicopter waited.

The pilot began lifting before Thomas reached it.

Thomas shouted.

The helicopter moved away.

Noah saw disbelief on his uncle’s face.

Someone had betrayed him.

Grant?

Richard?

No.

The pilot turned the aircraft toward the police zone and landed.

Federal agents arrested him.

Thomas was stranded.

He ran toward the maintenance stairs.

Noah followed.

Thomas stopped on the rooftop edge.

Wind tore at his coat.

Sirens surrounded the building below.

“No more exits.”

Noah said.

Thomas laughed.

“There are always exits.”

“Not this time.”

Thomas looked down forty-two stories.

Noah stepped closer.

“Lucas deserved better.”

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Lucas was weak.”

“No.”

“He trusted people.”

“That isn’t weakness.”

“He trusted Vivian.”

Noah looked toward the rooftop door.

Vivian stood there with officers.

Thomas saw her.

“He trusted Arthur.”

Noah remained still.

“He trusted Scarlett.”

Thomas smiled.

“And she betrayed him.”

Scarlett’s voice came from behind the police.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

She stood beside Detective Ortiz.

Bruised.

Pale.

But upright.

“You did.”

Thomas stared at his daughter.

Scarlett walked closer.

“You made me afraid.”

“Scarlett.”

“You made Mom afraid.”

“Your mother made choices.”

“So did you.”

Thomas lowered his gun slightly.

For the first time, his expression resembled pain.

“I did everything for you.”

Scarlett laughed.

“No.”

“You built wealth.”

“For you.”

“You built graves.”

Thomas’s jaw tightened.

Scarlett continued.

“You made me think I was responsible for Lucas.”

“You were.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I brought him evidence.”

“You left him.”

“Because he told me to survive.”

Thomas raised the gun.

Noah moved.

Police shouted.

Scarlett did not flinch.

“Do it.”

Thomas stared at her.

“Go ahead.”

Her voice shook.

“Spend the rest of your life knowing your last act was proving every terrible thing Lucas believed about you.”

Thomas’s arm trembled.

Then the gun dropped.

Police rushed him.

He resisted.

Not dramatically.

Not bravely.

He simply seemed unable to understand that people no longer obeyed him.

Handcuffs closed around his wrists.

Thomas Hale was arrested on the rooftop of the company he had spent half his life trying to control.

Noah watched officers lead him away.

It should have felt finished.

Then Agent Kim approached.

“We have a problem.”

Noah looked at him.

“What?”

“The original Cathedral drive.”

“What about it?”

“The one recovered from Lucas’s grave.”

“Yes.”

Kim’s face tightened.

“It’s missing.”

Noah went still.

“How?”

“The evidence courier never reached the federal lab.”

“Where is he?”

“His vehicle was found abandoned.”

Noah stared.

“Thomas was here.”

“I know.”

“Richard is in custody.”

“Yes.”

“Grant is in custody.”

“Yes.”

“Vivian is here.”

“Yes.”

“Scarlett is here.”

Kim nodded.

Noah felt cold.

Project Cathedral still had someone inside the system.

May you like

Someone they had not identified.

And that person now held the only original evidence capable of proving the entire conspiracy.
