CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN THEY ERASED

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The entire sunroom remained frozen as Paige held the photograph in her trembling hands.

Evelyn's face had turned ghostly white.

For the first time since Paige had met her, the powerful matriarch looked weak.

Afraid.

Reid slowly knelt beside the scattered documents.

His fingers found the yellowed hospital record.

He unfolded it carefully.

The date was thirty-one years old.

The names written across the page made his stomach drop.

Mother: Helen Carter.

Infant: Reid Carter.

Not Reid Whitmore.

Not Reid Evelyn Whitmore.

Reid Carter.

His breathing became uneven.

"What is this?" he whispered.

Evelyn didn't answer.

Instead, she stared at the floor.

The silence itself was an answer.

Paige watched as one of the older guests suddenly covered her mouth.

"I remember Helen," the woman said softly.

Several heads turned.

The elderly guest looked directly at Evelyn.

"She worked here."

The room became even quieter.

"Your husband loved her."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The truth was finally coming.

Thirty years earlier, William Whitmore had fallen deeply in love with Helen Carter, a young woman who worked on the Whitmore estate.

When Helen became pregnant, William had promised to marry her.

But Evelyn came from wealth.

Influence.

Power.

And she refused to lose her place in the Whitmore family.

According to the documents hidden inside the album, Helen had been pressured to leave the estate shortly after Reid's birth.

Months later, she disappeared completely.

The official story claimed she abandoned her child.

The documents told a different story.

One signed statement revealed that Helen had tried to return for her son many times.

Each attempt had been blocked.

Each letter had been intercepted.

Each visit had been denied.

For thirty years, Evelyn had allowed everyone to believe Helen had abandoned Reid.

It was a lie.

And now the lie was unraveling in front of fifty witnesses.

Reid stared at Evelyn.

"Where is she?"

Evelyn's lips trembled.

"I don't know."

May you like

For the first time in his life, he didn't believe her.

Not for a second.
