Chapter 1: The Truth Hidden in the Flames

The ballroom remained silent.

No one dared to move.

Caroline stared at the faded photograph in Emily's trembling hand.

In the picture, two little girls smiled beside a birthday cake.

One was Caroline.

The other was the sister everyone believed had died eighteen years ago.

Emily.

Caroline's eyes filled with tears.

"It can't be..." she whispered.

"But it is."

Emily's voice was soft.

"I never died."

Across the room, Richard suddenly stepped backward.

His wine glass slipped from his hand.

Crash.

Everyone turned toward him.

For years, Richard had been respected as the man who rebuilt the Whitmore family after tragedy.

But now fear covered his face.

Emily slowly looked at him.

"You told everyone I was dead."

Richard swallowed hard.

"Emily, you don't understand."

"Then explain."

The room grew colder.

Emily revealed that on the night of the fire, she had awakened to smoke filling her bedroom.

She remembered someone opening her door.

Not to save her.

To take her away.

A stranger carried her from the burning house and drove her out of town.

She was abandoned at an orphanage under a different name.

For years she believed her family had given her away.

Until six months earlier.

An elderly nurse from the orphanage, dying of cancer, confessed the truth.

A wealthy man had paid a large amount of money to hide her identity forever.

The nurse gave Emily a copy of the original documents.

The signature on every payment was Richard Whitmore.

The ballroom exploded with shocked whispers.

Caroline turned toward her stepfather.

"Tell me she's lying."

Richard couldn't answer.

Because he wasn't.
