CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET INSIDE THE INVITATION

Daniel immediately contacted the police.
Within minutes, the hotel entrances were locked, security officers were positioned at every exit, and the ballroom guests were asked to remain inside.
But Vanessa was no longer in the lobby.
Her car had never reached the front entrance.
She had disappeared through the hotel’s underground service corridor.
The general manager looked ashamed.
“She must have used an employee access door.”
Daniel turned to him.
“How did she know where it was?”
No one answered.
Leah studied the security footage again.
Vanessa had moved through the ballroom confidently. She knew which cameras to avoid and exactly when Eleanor would be alone.
This had been planned.
“Play the video from ten minutes earlier,” Leah said.
The manager hesitated.
Daniel nodded.
“Do it.”
The footage moved backward.
Guests entered beneath the golden chandeliers. Waiters carried champagne. Staff members checked invitations near the ballroom doors.
Then Leah noticed something.
“Stop.”
The image froze.
A young man wearing a hotel supervisor’s uniform stood beside Vanessa. He appeared to be checking her invitation, but his hand was covering the security camera’s view.
Leah recognized him.
“That’s Eric.”
“Who is Eric?” Daniel asked.
“Eric Lawson. Assistant banquet manager.”
The general manager’s face tightened.
“He called in sick tonight.”
“He’s not sick,” Leah said.
The footage continued.
Eric whispered something to Vanessa before walking toward the service hallway.
He had given her access.
Daniel called the head of security.
“Find Eric Lawson.”
Less than two minutes later, a security officer responded through the radio.
They had found Eric in a storage room near the underground garage.
He was carrying seventy thousand dollars in cash and a one-way airline ticket.
Vanessa had paid him to help steal the foundation documents.
But she had not escaped yet.
A motion sensor had detected movement inside the hotel’s closed east wing.
Daniel, security, and the police headed upstairs.
Leah remained with Eleanor in the private lounge.
“You should go home,” Leah told her gently. “This may take a while.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“I have spent seventy-four years refusing to leave before the truth arrives.”
Leah smiled.
“You really are stubborn.”
“I warned you.”
A few moments later, Eleanor noticed something inside her cream handbag.
She reached beneath the lining and removed a small gold gala invitation.
It was Vanessa’s invitation.
“This isn’t mine,” Eleanor said.
Leah took it carefully.
Vanessa must have accidentally dropped it into Eleanor’s handbag while removing the envelope.
The invitation felt unusually thick.
Leah ran her thumb along the edge.
“There’s something inside.”
She opened the folded paper.
A narrow electronic card was hidden beneath the gold cover.
It contained a small wireless transmitter.
Leah’s eyes widened.
“She was tracking you.”
Eleanor’s expression became troubled.
“That explains how she always knew where I was.”
“Always?”
Eleanor hesitated.
Then she revealed something she had not told Daniel.
For nearly three months, the Harrington Foundation had received anonymous threats.
Someone had demanded that Eleanor approve a private development contract before the medical center could be built.
The contract belonged to Carlisle Urban Holdings.
Vanessa’s family company.
The proposed agreement would have redirected nearly sixty million dollars from the children’s hospital project into shell companies controlled by Vanessa and her business partners.
Eleanor had refused.
“I believed the threats were empty,” she said.
“They weren’t,” Leah replied.
Vanessa had attended the gala to steal Eleanor’s signed authorization papers. With Eric’s help, she planned to replace one page and make the fraudulent contract appear legitimate.
Leah immediately called Daniel.
He answered after one ring.
“Leah?”
“We found something inside Vanessa’s invitation.”
She explained the transmitter and the threats.
Daniel went silent.
Then he said, “Lock the lounge door. Do not let anyone inside unless I call you first.”
Leah stood and secured the door.
Eleanor looked at her calmly.
“You seem more frightened now than when Vanessa raised her hand.”
“Because now I know she didn’t act alone.”
A soft knock came from the hallway.
“Hotel security,” a man called. “Mr. Harrington sent us.”
Leah moved toward the door, then stopped.
Daniel had said he would call first.
He had not called.
“Can I see your identification?” Leah asked.
The man outside did not answer.
The doorknob turned slowly.
Eleanor gripped her cane.
Leah stepped between her and the entrance.
The man knocked again, harder this time.
“Open the door.”
Leah took out her phone and called Daniel.
At that exact moment, the door shuddered beneath a heavy impact.
Someone was trying to force it open.
Eleanor’s hand trembled.
“Leah, get behind me.”
Leah looked at the elderly woman holding a wooden cane like a weapon.
“Absolutely not.”
The door shook again.
Daniel answered.
“They’re at the lounge,” Leah whispered.
“Move away from the door. Security is coming.”
The lock cracked.
The door opened several inches.
A man in a dark suit reached through the gap.
Before he could enter, Leah grabbed a brass lamp from the side table and struck the door with its heavy base.
The man pulled his arm back.
Eleanor used her cane to push a small cabinet against the entrance.
Together, the two women held the door closed.
Footsteps thundered down the hallway.
Then Daniel’s voice rang out.
“Police! Step away from the door!”
The attacker attempted to run but was stopped before reaching the elevator.
Daniel entered the lounge seconds later.
He looked first at his mother, then at Leah, then at the lamp still clutched in her hands.
“Are either of you hurt?”
“No,” Eleanor replied.
Leah slowly lowered the lamp.
The arrested man was identified as Vanessa’s chief financial officer.
He had come to recover the tracking device before investigators discovered the conspiracy.
Daniel looked at Leah with a mixture of relief and disbelief.
“You protected her twice in one night.”
Leah released an unsteady breath.
“I think your mother protected me too.”
Eleanor lifted her cane proudly.
“I still have excellent aim.”
The police soon located Vanessa in the hotel’s east-wing laundry room, hiding inside an empty linen transport truck.
The stolen documents were recovered from beneath her gown.
As officers led her through the ballroom, Vanessa saw Leah standing beside Eleanor.
Her expression twisted with anger.
“You have no idea what you’ve destroyed,” Vanessa said.
Leah looked at her steadily.
“No. I think I saved it.”
Vanessa was taken away in handcuffs.
But the evening’s final surprise came when Daniel received a call from the foundation’s attorney.
The attempted theft was only part of a much larger scheme.
May you like
Vanessa had already bribed two members of the Harrington Foundation’s board.
And one of them was sitting inside the ballroom.
