Chapter 1 — The Smile That Turned Into a Nightmare

Lily looked up with innocent curiosity.

"Thank you," she whispered, hugging her old stuffed rabbit a little tighter.

Sloane's smile widened.

It never reached her eyes.

"What a sweet little toy," she said, reaching for the rabbit.

Lily instinctively held it closer.

"My daddy gave it to me."

The words landed harder than anyone expected.

Nora, setting down a tray across the room, froze.

She had never told Lily those words weren't true.

The rabbit had belonged to Lily's father—or at least, the man Nora once believed would return.

Sloane laughed softly.

"Your daddy?"

She looked around at the guests.

"How precious."

Several people chuckled politely.

"You know," Sloane continued, "this party is for very important people."

She gently brushed imaginary dust from Lily's shoulder.

"And little girls who belong downstairs shouldn't wander into photographs."

Lily lowered her head.

"I'm sorry."

Sloane noticed the blue ribbon tied neatly into Lily's curls.

"So pretty."

Before Lily could react, Sloane snipped the ribbon with her silver scissors.

The curls fell unevenly across the child's face.

Gasps rippled through the room.

Lily reached for her hair.

Her lips trembled.

"My mommy braided it..."

Sloane crouched lower.

"Oh, sweetheart."

"Now you look much more appropriate."

The room remained silent.

No one wanted to challenge the future Mrs. Whitmore.

Nora rushed across the ballroom.

"Lily!"

She dropped to her knees, wrapping trembling arms around her daughter.

"I'm so sorry..."

"I'm so sorry..."

Sloane straightened her gown as if nothing had happened.

"I simply fixed a messy hairstyle."

At that exact moment, the ballroom doors opened.

Caleb Whitmore had arrived.

One look at Lily's eyes erased every prepared speech waiting in his mind.

He recognized them instantly.

Not because he knew the child.

But because those golden flecks belonged to someone he had spent years mourning.

His sister.

Claire.

The room held its breath.

"What happened here?" Caleb asked.

No one answered.

Not even Sloane.

For the first time all evening...

She looked uncertain.
