Chapter 6 - BENEATH THE WHITE ROSES

White Rose Shipping occupied the last unreconstructed warehouse on the eastern edge of Harbor Point.
Luxury towers surrounded it on three sides, their glass walls reflecting the gray afternoon.
The fourth side faced the river.
Container cranes moved above the docks like enormous metal skeletons.
Daniel remembered attending ceremonies there as a child while his father praised progress and his mother cut ribbons.
No one had ever mentioned that the ground once belonged to Rafael Marquez.
Mara coordinated the approach from an unmarked command vehicle two blocks away.
Port police closed the river entrance.
Tactical officers moved through adjacent buildings.
Daniel sat beside her with Elena’s last words repeating in his mind.
The promise is under the roses.
“It may be a trap,” Mara said.
“It is definitely a trap.”
“You understand that you are not entering.”
“No.”
Mara turned toward him.
“No, you do not understand?”
“No, I am not staying outside if Elena is in there.”
“You could get her killed.”
“They asked for the flash drive.”
“They asked you to come alone.”
“I brought a decoy.”
Daniel lifted a duplicate drive prepared by the forensic team.
“The original remains with evidence.”
Mara studied him.
“You planned to exchange this without telling me.”
“I planned to create time.”
“Your wife needs trained officers, not a husband trying to become one.”
“She needs someone they believe will risk everything.”
Mara looked through the windshield toward the warehouse.
“They already know that.”
A message arrived on Daniel’s phone.
COME TO DOOR NINE.
ALONE.
BRING THE DRIVE.
A live photograph showed Elena sitting in a wooden chair with her hands bound in front of her.
Her face was pale, but she appeared conscious.
A second chair stood beside her.
Thomas sat in it wearing hospital clothes and a winter coat.
His eyes were open.
Daniel showed Mara.
She immediately ordered teams toward the south loading bays.
A second message followed.
NO POLICE OR THE OLD MAN GOES INTO THE RIVER FIRST.
Daniel’s phone rang.
Vivian spoke.
“Walk.”
“You will release them when you have the drive.”
“I will release Elena.”
“And Dad.”
“Your father belongs to consequences now.”
“You do not control this anymore.”
A pause followed.
“You finally understand something.”
“Is Grant there?”
Vivian laughed without humor.
“Grant is probably standing beside you pretending to be useful.”
“He is not here.”
“Then he is doing what he does best.”
“What is that?”
“Cleaning the room before anyone sees the blood.”
The call ended.
Daniel slipped a transmitter beneath his coat and walked toward Door Nine.
Mara’s voice entered through the concealed earpiece.
“Keep the line open.”
The warehouse door lifted six inches.
Daniel crouched and passed beneath it.
The interior smelled of wet wood, diesel, and cut flowers.
Rows of refrigerated containers formed narrow corridors.
White roses filled steel racks under cold blue lights.
A red arrow had been painted on the concrete floor.
Daniel followed it deeper into the building.
The temperature dropped with every step.
He entered a large packing room where petals covered the ground like snow.
Elena sat near the loading platform exactly as shown in the photograph.
Thomas sat beside her.
Vivian stood behind them holding a small pistol.
Lucas stood near the river doors with both hands visible.
His lower lip was split.
A dark bruise covered one side of his face.
Daniel stopped.
“Let them go.”
Vivian pointed the weapon toward Thomas.
“The drive.”
“First, tell me who did this to Lucas.”
Lucas looked away.
Vivian answered.
“The same man who convinced him stealing from you was harmless.”
“Grant?”
“Stop saying his name like it is a question.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“The baby?”
“He’s moving.”
Thomas tried to speak through a strip of tape.
Vivian pressed the barrel against his shoulder.
“Do not make this sentimental.”
Daniel held up the flash drive.
“You receive this when Elena is beside me.”
“You are not negotiating.”
“Then shoot me and search my body.”
Vivian’s expression tightened.
Lucas glanced toward the upper catwalk.
The movement was small, but Daniel saw it.
Someone else was watching.
Mara’s voice whispered through the earpiece.
“Thermal shows another person above you.”
Daniel kept his face still.
Vivian moved behind Elena and cut the rope around her wrists with a knife.
“Stand.”
Elena rose carefully.
Her knees buckled once, but she remained upright.
“Walk to Daniel.”
Elena took one step.
A suppressed gunshot cracked from the catwalk.
The bullet struck the floor inches from her foot.
Everyone froze.
A man’s voice echoed from above.
“No one moves until I have the drive.”
Daniel recognized Grant Mercer.
Grant emerged from behind a steel support wearing a dark coat and holding a rifle.
His face looked nothing like the exhausted executive from the boardroom.
The uncertainty was gone.
So was the tremor in his hands.
Vivian turned her pistol upward.
“You said she would not be harmed.”
Grant smiled.
“I have said many useful things to you.”
Daniel looked at Lucas.
“You knew he was here.”
Lucas swallowed.
“He brought us.”
“Us?”
“Mom and me.”
Vivian’s voice became sharp.
“Lucas, be quiet.”
Grant descended the metal stairs without lowering the rifle.
“Give me the drive, Daniel.”
“You built Meridian.”
“I improved it.”
“Samuel built the companies.”
“Samuel built paper.”
Grant reached the packing floor.
“I built obedience.”
Daniel forced himself to remain calm.
“You used my mother.”
Grant glanced at Vivian.
“Vivian did not require much encouragement.”
“She forged the release.”
“She forged one signature.”
“Thomas protected it.”
“Thomas protected a fortune.”
Grant’s eyes returned to Daniel.
“I protected the system that kept it alive.”
“What do you want?”
“Control of the Harbor Point entities before the child is born.”
“You cannot erase Rafael’s trust.”
“No.”
“But I can force the current board to settle.”
“By kidnapping the beneficiary?”
“By demonstrating that Hartwell leadership is unstable, divided, and criminally exposed.”
Grant nodded toward Thomas.
“Your father will confess to fraud.”
He nodded toward Vivian.
“Your mother will confess to coercion and false medical reports.”
He nodded toward Lucas.
“Your brother will confess to theft.”
Finally, he looked at Daniel.
“And you will sign emergency voting authority to me in exchange for Elena’s safe return.”
“You already have them all.”
“I need your signature.”
“You forged it before.”
“For bank transfers.”
Grant smiled faintly.
“Shareholder authority requires a live biometric confirmation.”
Daniel understood why Grant had not killed him.
He also understood why Elena had been kept alive.
Her trust claim made her more valuable than dead until the company settlement was signed.
“Where are the documents?”
Grant pointed toward a table covered with legal papers and a biometric tablet.
Daniel slowly approached it.
Mara’s voice whispered.
“Teams are in position.”
Grant’s eyes shifted toward Daniel’s ear.
“Remove the transmitter.”
Daniel did not move.
Grant fired again.
The bullet struck Thomas’s chair and tore through the wooden armrest.
Elena screamed.
Daniel pulled the earpiece free and dropped it.
Grant crushed it beneath his shoe.
“Police are outside,” Daniel said.
“They were always going to be outside.”
“You cannot leave.”
“I do not need to leave through a door.”
A cargo vessel sounded its horn beyond the river wall.
Grant had arranged transportation by water.
Daniel placed the decoy drive on the table.
Grant picked it up and inserted it into a laptop.
The screen requested a password.
“What is it?”
“The Promise.”
Grant typed the words.
The decoy opened a convincing copy of the first folder.
For several seconds, he focused on the screen.
Elena moved.
She grabbed the silver flower bucket beside her and threw it at Vivian’s gun hand.
The pistol struck the floor.
Lucas lunged toward Grant.
Grant swung the rifle and struck him across the jaw.
Daniel overturned the table and drove his shoulder into Grant’s chest.
The rifle fired into the ceiling.
Police breached three doors at once.
Shouts filled the warehouse.
Vivian crawled toward her pistol.
Elena kicked it beneath a container.
Grant hit Daniel in the ribs and reached inside his coat for a second weapon.
Thomas threw his weight sideways, toppling his chair into Grant’s legs.
Grant fell.
Daniel pinned his wrist while officers surrounded them.
“Drop it.”
Grant released the handgun.
Mara rushed to Elena.
Paramedics entered behind her.
Lucas lay on the floor holding his jaw.
Vivian remained on her knees, staring at Grant with a hatred that looked almost like betrayal.
Grant began to laugh as officers handcuffed him.
Daniel looked down at him.
“What is funny?”
“You think this was the rescue.”
“It is over.”
“No.”
Grant’s smile widened.
“This was the transfer.”
Daniel looked toward the laptop.
The decoy drive remained connected.
A progress bar had appeared on the screen.
BIOMETRIC TOKEN ACCEPTED.
EMERGENCY AUTHORITY TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Daniel had never touched the biometric tablet.
Then he saw the small camera built into the laptop lid.
Grant had captured his face while he stood at the table.
The system had used Daniel’s live image without his knowledge.
Daniel seized the laptop.
“What did you transfer?”
Grant looked toward Elena’s stomach.
“Not the company.”
“Then what?”
“The trust’s notice rights.”
Daniel did not understand until Thomas began struggling against the tape over his mouth.
Mara removed it.
Thomas dragged in a breath.
“He found the trustee.”
Daniel turned to Grant.
“Who is the trustee?”
Grant said nothing.
Thomas looked at Elena.
May you like
His next words left the entire room silent.
“Your mother.”
