Chapter 2: The Truth Inside the Envelope
Richard immediately pointed toward Emily.
"She's lying!"
Michael calmly stepped inside.
"I wouldn't recommend making any false statements."
He placed several documents on the coffee table.
"The envelope everyone has been fighting over..."
Brandon lunged toward it.
Michael stopped him.
"...contains nothing but blank paper."
Brandon ripped it open.
Every sheet was empty.
His face turned pale.
"The real sixty-five thousand dollars," Michael continued, "was transferred three weeks ago into a protected medical trust that only Emily controls."
Diane collapsed onto the sofa.
Richard stared at the papers in disbelief.
"You tricked us."
Emily answered quietly.
"No."
"I protected my chance to survive."
One of the officers accepted Emily's phone.
"We'll secure this as evidence."
Richard's confidence disappeared.
He realized every threat...
Every demand...
