Chapter 13 - Forty-Eight Hours

Daniel Mercer's press conference lasted eleven minutes.

By the end of it, Nathan had become the villain in a new story.

Not the distracted husband who failed to notice his wife was pregnant.

A man who had known.

A man who had allegedly abandoned her anyway.

Daniel stood behind a Whitmore Global podium and spoke with the calm authority of someone who had rehearsed every sentence.

"Executive health claims associated with Mrs. Whitmore were received by company benefits administration before the Plaza Meridian gala."

Reporters shouted questions.

Daniel continued.

"A confidential notice was forwarded to the chief executive office."

Another question.

"I cannot speak to what Mr. Whitmore chose to read or ignore."

That sentence spread everywhere.

Emma watched the clip from her hospital bed.

I cannot speak to what Mr. Whitmore chose to read or ignore.

It was devastating because it sounded true.

Nathan had ignored so much.

Why not one more thing?

Eleanor stood beside the window with her arms folded.

"He's choosing his words very carefully."

Emma looked at her.

"Is he lying?"

"I don't know."

"Then don't call it careful."

Eleanor nodded.

"Fair."

Emma's phone rang.

Nathan.

She let it ring once before answering.

"Did your office receive a notice?"

Nathan did not waste time.

"Yes."

Emma closed her eyes.

"When did you learn that?"

"Twenty minutes ago."

"Who received it?"

"My executive administration inbox."

"Did you see it?"

"I don't remember seeing it."

Emma's jaw tightened.

"That isn't the same as no."

"I know."

"Can you prove you didn't?"

"Not yet."

"Can Daniel prove you did?"

Nathan hesitated.

"He has a forwarding receipt."

Emma felt anger rise.

"To your office."

"Yes."

"Not to you personally."

"Correct."

"Who monitored that inbox?"

"My chief of staff and two assistants."

"Names."

Nathan gave them.

The first, Samantha Cole, had worked for Nathan for nine years.

The second and third were executive coordinators Emma barely knew.

"Where is Samantha?"

"On leave."

Emma frowned.

"Since when?"

"Yesterday."

"Why?"

"Her father had surgery."

Emma stared at the wall.

"Convenient."

Nathan did not defend Samantha.

"I've asked independent counsel to contact her."

"Not company counsel?"

"No."

That answer mattered.

Emma looked at the paused image of Daniel on television.

"What happens now?"

Nathan exhaled.

"Martin gave me forty-eight hours."

"For what?"

"To sign a separation agreement with the company."

Emma's stomach tightened.

"What does it say?"

"I resign from the board."

"And?"

"I waive claims relating to the Harbor vote."

"And?"

Nathan's silence told her there was more.

"Say it."

"I acknowledge executive responsibility for foundation disbursements during my tenure."

Emma sat straighter despite the pain.

"Meaning you take the blame."

"Not criminal blame."

"Don't play language games with me."

"Yes."

Emma's voice hardened.

"What do they give you?"

"They withdraw the petition to enforce the postnup."

"That's mine to challenge, not yours to trade."

"I told them that."

"What else?"

"They stop all Harbor acquisition activity for one year."

Emma laughed bitterly.

"One year."

"Yes."

"And the press?"

Nathan's voice became colder.

"Martin implied the attacks on you would stop."

Emma went silent.

That was not a settlement.

It was extortion disguised as corporate governance.

"Do you have that in writing?"

"No."

"Of course not."

"I recorded the call."

Emma blinked.

"You did what?"

"New York counsel confirmed one-party consent applies to the call."

For the first time, Nathan sounded like the old strategist Emma remembered, but the target was different.

He was no longer strategizing around her.

He was preserving evidence for her.

"Good," Emma said.

Nathan went quiet.

"That sounded almost like approval."

"Don't get excited."

"I won't."

Emma almost smiled.

Then the weight of the situation returned.

"What are you going to do?"

"Reject it."

"Immediately?"

"No."

Emma frowned.

"Why not?"

"Because forty-eight hours gives independent counsel time to preserve the servers before Martin knows I won't cooperate."

Emma looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor's eyebrows lifted.

"Your son may finally be learning patience."

Nathan heard her.

"Hello, Mom."

"You still look terrible on television."

"Thank you."

Emma almost laughed again.

The moment disappeared when Clara's monitor alarm sounded from the adjacent nursery area.

Emma's body reacted before her mind did.

"I have to go."

She ended the call.

The nurse entered quickly.

"Clara had a brief oxygen drop during feeding."

Emma went pale.

"Is she okay?"

"She's recovering."

"I want to see her."

The nurse helped Emma into the wheelchair.

For the next hour, corporate scandal became irrelevant.

Clara slept with one tiny fist beside her cheek.

The pediatrician explained that premature babies sometimes tired while feeding.

They would slow the bottle schedule.

They would watch her another night.

Emma nodded at every instruction.

She wrote down every number.

When the doctor left, Emma realized Nathan was standing outside the nursery glass again.

He had returned to the hospital without asking to enter.

Emma looked at the nurse.

"Let him in."

Nathan came to Clara's bassinet.

He did not ask about the company.

He asked the nurse to explain paced feeding.

He listened.

He took notes.

When Clara woke, Emma held the bottle while Nathan watched her breathing.

For twenty minutes, the world narrowed to a premature baby learning to eat.

Then Nathan's phone vibrated.

He ignored it.

It vibrated again.

And again.

Emma looked at him.

"Answer it."

"It can wait."

"If the building is on fire, I don't want to learn about it from a headline."

Nathan checked the screen.

His face changed.

"It's independent counsel."

"Go."

He stepped into the corridor.

Emma watched through the glass.

Nathan listened without speaking for nearly a minute.

Then he looked toward Emma.

His face had gone pale.

He returned.

"They found the forwarded benefits notice."

Emma's hand stopped against Clara's blanket.

"And?"

"It was opened from my account."

The room went quiet.

"When?"

"Three days before the gala."

Emma stared at him.

"So Daniel was right."

"Partly."

"Partly?"

"The login came from Chicago."

"You were in Chicago three days before the gala?"

"No."

Nathan's voice became steady.

"I was in Manhattan."

Emma's pulse changed.

"Who was in Chicago?"

Nathan looked at her.

"Olivia."

A chill moved through Emma.

"Could she log into your account?"

"She knew an old password."

"Old?"

"I changed it after Chicago."

"Before or after she tried to kiss you?"

"After."

Emma looked down at Clara.

"So Olivia may have known I was pregnant."

Nathan's face tightened.

"Before the gala."

The same Olivia who had interrupted Emma when she tried to tell Nathan something important.

The same Olivia who had pulled Nathan onto the dance floor.

The same Olivia who had smiled when cameras turned toward them.

Emma's anger became cold.

"Call her."

Nathan shook his head.

"Not without counsel."

Emma looked at him.

"Good."

Nathan's phone vibrated again.

This time it was a message from Daniel.

Nathan read it.

Then he handed the phone to Emma.

May you like

Daniel had written one sentence.

"Ask Olivia why she opened the benefits notice and never told either of you."
