CHAPTER 2 — THE CHILD THEY ERASED

The ballroom stood frozen.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Lucas tightened his grip around the silver crest as dozens of shocked faces stared at him.

His fiancée, Evelyn, looked as if the ground had disappeared beneath her feet.

"Lucas, this is insane," she said weakly. "She's just a child."

Lucas slowly turned toward her.

"No."

His voice was calm.

Dangerously calm.

"She's not just a child."

He looked down at the trembling little girl.

"She's Amelia Laurent."

The name exploded through the ballroom.

Twenty years earlier, the Laurent family had publicly announced the tragic death of their youngest daughter after a boating accident.

The newspapers covered it.

The city mourned.

The family built a memorial.

But now the impossible stood in front of them.

Alive.

The little girl looked confused.

"My mommy called me Lily."

Lucas knelt beside her.

"What is your mother's name?"

The girl hesitated.

"Anna."

Lucas felt his chest tighten.

Anna.

The family's former nanny.

The woman who disappeared shortly after Amelia supposedly died.

Suddenly, an elderly voice echoed across the room.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

Grandfather Laurent slowly rose from his chair.

The old man's face had become pale.

For the first time in years, fear appeared in his eyes.

Lucas looked directly at him.

"You knew."

The old man remained silent.

And that silence told everyone the truth.

The guests began whispering.

The family secret was no longer buried.

May you like

It was alive.

And it was standing in the middle of the ballroom holding a silver crest.
