Chapter 2: The Reunion

Emily barely slept.

Every mile to Mercy Children's Hospital felt heavier than the last.

She rehearsed a thousand apologies.

None of them sounded enough.

When she reached the pediatric wing, she stopped outside a brightly painted playroom.

Children laughed.

Volunteers folded colorful paper airplanes with patients recovering from surgery.

Standing in the middle of them...

Was Daniel.

No longer the little boy on the porch.

Now thirty years old.

A respected pediatric surgeon.

He smiled gently as he helped a little girl launch her paper airplane across the room.

When he finally looked up, their eyes met.

Neither of them spoke.

Emily slowly walked toward him.

"I don't deserve your forgiveness," she whispered.

"I left you."

"I left your father."

"I was selfish... and afraid."

Daniel remained silent for several long seconds.

Then he answered softly.

"You did."

She lowered her head.

"But that's not why I asked you here."

He pointed toward the children laughing nearby.

"When I was little, I promised myself something."

"If I ever had enough money..."

"I would build a place where no child felt abandoned."

Emily looked around.

The playroom walls were covered with paper airplanes carrying children's wishes.

One volunteer smiled.

"Dr. Carter started this program in memory of his father."

Daniel looked back at Emily.

"I realized something."

"I couldn't teach children hope if I refused to live it myself."

Emily finally broke into uncontrollable tears.

"I'm so sorry."

"I know."

Those two words carried no bitterness.

Only peace.

For the first time in twenty years...

The silence between them disappeared.
