Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lies

Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lies

The ballroom doors burst open just as the first police officer crossed the marble floor.

Paramedics rushed past the stunned guests and knelt beside Sophie. Within seconds they wrapped a white bandage around the side of her head, stopping the bleeding before carefully lifting her onto a stretcher.

Evelyn refused to let go of her daughter's hand.

"I'm coming with her."

One of the officers nodded.

"You will. But first... we need to know who assaulted the child."

No one answered.

Two hundred guests suddenly found the chandeliers, the flowers, or their shoes incredibly interesting.

Preston stepped forward confidently.

"Officer, this woman is trying to distract everyone. Her daughter stole my phone."

He pointed toward Sophie.

"I merely reacted."

The officer looked at the unconscious child.

"You reacted... by striking an eight-year-old with a wooden board?"

Preston hesitated.

"It wasn't that hard."

The paramedic looked up sharply.

"She has a concussion."

Silence.

Then Evelyn slowly raised one trembling finger toward the ceiling.

"The security camera."

Every head followed her gaze.

The hotel manager swallowed.

"There are four cameras covering this ballroom."

Preston's confidence cracked for the first time.

His mother immediately stepped forward.

"My son is the victim here."

The manager ignored her.

"I can access the recordings immediately."

"No!" Preston shouted.

The single word echoed through the ballroom.

Everyone turned toward him.

His face had become ghostly white.

"I mean..."

"We should wait for my attorney."

The police officer slowly removed his notebook.

"Interesting."

"Only guilty people ask us not to watch evidence."

Ten minutes later...

The hotel's security office was packed.

Police officers.

The manager.

Preston.

Madison.

Evelyn.

Her parents.

And several key witnesses.

The video began.

Everyone watched Preston walking around the ballroom with his phone in his hand.

He laughed.

He hugged guests.

He placed the phone inside his jacket.

Then...

He looked around carefully.

No one appeared to notice him.

Except the camera.

He quietly removed the phone.

Walked behind Sophie's chair.

Slipped it into the little girl's denim jacket pocket.

Then calmly walked away.

The room fell completely silent.

The footage continued.

Sophie never touched the jacket.

She never even looked at it.

Five minutes later Preston dramatically announced that his phone had disappeared.

Then searched only one person.

Her.

The little girl he had framed from the beginning.

Madison covered her mouth.

"Oh my God..."

The officer paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

Finally he looked directly at Preston.

"Would you like to explain why you planted evidence on a child before assaulting her?"

Preston opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

May you like

For the first time in his life...

No one could rescue him.
