Chapter 1: The Truth Buried for Twenty Years

No one moved.
The chapel remained frozen in absolute silence.
Emily stared at Nathan as though she had never seen him before.
Only moments earlier, he had been the man she was about to marry.
Now...
He might be her brother.
Nathan slowly stepped away from the altar.
His breathing became uneven.
"There has to be some mistake."
Charles Whitman swallowed hard before opening another page from the aging file.
"There was a fire in the maternity wing the night you disappeared."
"The hospital's surveillance system failed."
"The investigation concluded that someone had taken a newborn during the evacuation."
Margaret collapsed onto the front pew.
"I searched every orphanage."
"Every foster home."
"I never stopped looking."
Nathan's hands trembled.
"My parents..."
Charles lowered his eyes.
"The people who raised you legally adopted you through a private agency."
"They believed every document was legitimate."
"They never knew you had been stolen."
Nathan felt his entire childhood unravel.
The people he called Mom and Dad had loved him with everything they had.
But they were victims too.
Emily slowly removed her engagement ring.
Without saying a word...
She placed it into Nathan's shaking hand.
Both burst into tears.
Not because their future had ended.
But because they had nearly committed a tragedy neither of them could have imagined.
The pastor quietly closed his Bible.
"This wedding is over."
"No vows will be spoken today."
Outside, police officers arrived after Charles contacted the cold-case division.
The twenty-year-old kidnapping investigation was officially reopened.
One question remained unanswered.
Who had stolen baby Nathan...
...and why?
