Chapter 4: Champagne Turns to Ice

Hundreds of miles away...
Daniel stood aboard the luxury cruise ship holding a crystal glass of champagne.
His mother laughed beside him.
"The drama is finally over."
Daniel checked his phone.
No messages.
He smiled.
"I told you she'd be fine."
Then every phone aboard the ship vibrated simultaneously.
EMERGENCY WEATHER ALERT
Historic avalanche.
Mountain roads destroyed.
Several luxury cabins completely isolated.
Emergency crews unable to reach trapped residents.
Daniel frowned.
The alert included a satellite image.
His cabin.
His stomach dropped.
He called Emily.
No connection.
Again.
Nothing.
Again.
Straight to emergency failure.
His heartbeat accelerated.
His mother forced a smile.
"She's probably sleeping."
Daniel didn't answer.
For the first time...
He realized he had left his full-term pregnant wife completely alone inside one of the evacuation zones.
The champagne suddenly tasted like poison.
He demanded the captain turn the ship around.
The captain shook his head.
"We're already too far offshore."
May you like
Daniel stared at the dark ocean.
Nothing had ever felt so far away.
