Chapter 6 - The Man Emily Left Behind

I met Mark Ellison the next morning in the corner booth of a coffee shop three blocks from Rebecca's office.
Claire came with me and sat at a separate table close enough to intervene if the meeting became strange.
Mark arrived five minutes early.
He was thirty-five, broad-shouldered, tired-looking, and nothing like the villain Emily's emails had prepared me to imagine.
He placed his phone and a thick envelope on the table before he sat down.
"I am not here to win her back," he said.
"Good."
"And I am not here because I think Daniel ruined my relationship by himself."
"Also good."
He nodded once.
"Then we can start with facts."
That word mattered to me now.
Facts.
Mark had discovered Emily's renewed contact with Daniel eight days before our wedding.
Not because Emily confessed.
Because their wireless bill showed repeated calls to a Charleston number late at night.
Daniel's number.
"How far back did the calls go?" I asked.
Mark slid a spreadsheet toward me.
"Fourteen months."
My stomach tightened.
The first call was dated August of the previous year.
Daniel had told me he was attending a commercial real estate conference in Nashville that week.
Emily lived in Nashville.
"Did they meet?"
"Yes."
"How do you know?"
Mark opened a photo on his phone.
It showed Emily and Daniel sitting at an outdoor restaurant.
The photograph had been taken from across the street.
"Who took this?"
"One of Emily's friends."
"Why?"
"She sent it to another friend because she thought Emily was making a mistake."
He gave me the date.
August 23.
Daniel had called me that evening from his hotel room.
We had talked for forty minutes.
He told me he missed me.
I had fallen asleep smiling.
"Did they kiss then?"
"I do not know."
At least Mark admitted what he could not prove.
That made me trust him more than I wanted to.
He showed me call logs from September, November, January, March, April, June, August, and September.
The pattern was not constant.
Sometimes weeks passed without contact.
Then they would speak three nights in a row.
The longest call lasted one hour and forty-seven minutes.
It happened the night Daniel told me he had fallen asleep early because he was getting sick.
I remembered leaving tea outside his home office so I would not wake him.
He had not been sleeping.
He had been talking to Emily.
"Why did she stay with me?" Mark asked quietly.
The question sounded like it had been living inside him for weeks.
"I could ask Daniel the same thing."
Mark gave a humorless smile.
"Maybe people like them are not trying to choose."
I looked at him.
"Maybe they are trying to keep every door open."
That sentence felt truer than anything Daniel had told me.
Mark opened the envelope.
Inside were printed screenshots.
He had highlighted dates rather than sentences.
"These are from Emily's tablet backup."
I read the first exchange.
Emily had written, "Sometimes I think we made the biggest mistake of our lives."
Daniel replied, "I think about it too."
Another exchange, three months later, was worse.
Emily wrote, "Do you ever imagine what would happen if we both walked away?"
Daniel responded, "More than I should."
I already knew that phrase.
It was the one from the screenshot Emily sent me.
But now I had context.
She had asked about both of them leaving their partners.
Daniel had not shut the question down.
He had fed it.
"Keep going," Mark said.
The next screenshot was from March.
Daniel wrote, "I cannot blow up Hannah's life because I am confused."
Emily answered, "Then stop being confused."
Daniel replied, "I wish it were that simple."
I felt something inside me fracture again.
He had not described himself as committed.
He had described himself as confused.
The difference was enormous.
"Now April," Mark said.
There were more messages from that week than any other period.
Emily told Daniel she would be in Atlanta.
Daniel told her the hotel.
She asked if he wanted her to come.
Daniel wrote, "I do not know what I want."
Emily replied, "That is not a no."
He sent back, "No, it isn't."
My throat tightened.
The hotel room no longer mattered as much.
Intent had entered the room before either of them did.
"Did they have sex?" I asked.
Mark shook his head.
"I do not know."
"Emily implies they did."
"Emily implies whatever gives her leverage."
I looked up sharply.
"What does that mean?"
Mark unlocked his phone.
"You need to hear this."
He played an audio recording.
Emily's voice came first.
"If I leave Mark, what are you going to do?"
Daniel sounded tired.
"I told you I cannot promise you anything."
"You said you would handle Hannah."
"I said I would tell her about Atlanta."
"After the wedding."
"Yes."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"So you get to marry her and then decide whether you still want me."
Daniel was silent.
Emily continued.
"That is convenient."
Then Daniel said something I was not prepared for.
"Do not marry Mark until we figure out what this is."
The recording stopped.
I stared at Mark.
"When was that?"
"Three weeks before your wedding."
My fingers curled around the edge of the table.
"He told her not to marry you."
"Yes."
"Then married me."
"Yes."
I felt dizzy.
Mark leaned back.
"Emily ended our engagement the next day."
"Because of Daniel?"
"Partly."
"What do you mean?"
"We had other problems."
His honesty surprised me again.
"I worked too much."
"She wanted to move back to Atlanta."
"I did not."
"We were not as happy as our engagement photos made us look."
He paused.
"But Daniel gave her a reason to believe there was another life waiting."
I looked at the screenshots spread between us.
"Then why did he still marry me?"
Mark met my eyes.
"That is the question she could not tolerate."
I understood.
Emily had ended her engagement.
Daniel had not ended his.
He had stood under white roses and married me anyway.
To Emily, that was not closure.
It was rejection.
"So she came to Charleston to force an answer."
"Yes."
Mark took his phone back.
"But there is something you need to understand before you decide she is telling you the truth now."
"What?"
"She wanted you to leave him."
"Obviously."
"No."
He shook his head.
"I mean before the wedding."
He showed me a message Emily had sent a friend two weeks earlier.
"If Hannah knew about Atlanta, the wedding would be over by Friday."
The friend replied, "Are you going to tell her?"
Emily wrote, "Only if Daniel forces me to."
Another message followed.
"If he marries her, I will make sure she knows enough to walk."
I stared at the screen.
Emily had not sent me evidence out of kindness.
She had sent it because she wanted a specific result.
"So Daniel lied to me, and Emily is weaponizing the truth."
"That is my read."
"Do you think the hotel receipt is real?"
"Yes."
"Do you think they slept together?"
"I honestly do not know."
Mark gathered the papers slowly.
"But I know she lied to me about one important thing."
"What?"
"She told me Daniel begged her to come to Charleston."
He opened another recording.
This one was timestamped Friday night, the night before my wedding.
Emily's voice was tight with anger.
"If I come there, will you leave with me?"
Daniel answered, "Do not come."
"That is not what I asked."
"Emily, I am getting married tomorrow."
"Will you leave with me?"
A long pause.
Then Daniel said, "If you come, I will talk to you."
Emily asked, "And then?"
"I cannot promise anything."
The recording ended.
I felt no relief.
A faithful man would have said no.
A faithful man would have blocked the number.
A faithful man would have told his fiancee.
Daniel had done none of those things.
But he had not begged Emily to come either.
The truth was uglier than a simple affair.
He had kept both women emotionally suspended while telling each of us just enough to prevent the door from closing.
Mark checked the time.
"There is one more thing."
"What?"
"Emily was at your wedding venue before the ceremony."
My body went cold.
"No."
"Yes."
"Daniel told me she was not there."
"Then he lied again."
Mark slid his phone across the table.
The screen showed a still image from a security camera.
The timestamp was 3:36 p.m. Saturday.
My ceremony began at four.
Daniel stood near the service entrance of the estate in his tuxedo.
Emily stood directly in front of him.
Her hand was pressed against his chest.
And Daniel's hand was wrapped around her wrist.
Not pushing it away.
Holding it there.
At the bottom of the image was a second timestamp.
May you like
3:36:18 p.m.
Twenty-four minutes before Daniel cried while I walked down the aisle.
