PART 3: THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

PART 3: THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

For the next three hours, Michael fought to save the little boy's life.

The child suffered from a severe heart condition that had gone untreated for years.

When the surgery finally ended, Michael stepped into the waiting room exhausted.

The old man stood immediately.

"Is he alive?"

Michael nodded.

The elderly man's knees nearly gave out.

Tears streamed down his face.

"Thank God."

Michael watched him carefully.

Something didn't make sense.

"Who is he?"

The old man looked toward the recovery room window.

"My grandson."

Michael froze.

"What?"

The old man swallowed hard.

"His mother was your sister."

Michael felt the world tilt beneath him.

"I don't have a sister."

"You did."

The old man's voice broke.

"After I went to prison, your mother left town. Years later I found out she had given birth to a daughter."

Michael stared in disbelief.

The old man continued.

"She never told me. Never told you."

The room spun.

Everything he thought he knew about his family suddenly felt incomplete.

"Where is she now?" Michael asked quietly.

The old man's eyes filled with grief.

"She died six months ago."

Michael felt his chest tighten.

"An accident."

The old man nodded.

"Before she died, she made me promise to protect Lily."

The little boy had lost his mother.

His grandfather had no money.

No home.

No help.

And yet he had carried him through a storm to save his life.

For the first time that night, Michael saw something he had never expected to see.

May you like

Not the man who abandoned him.

But a man who had spent decades trying to come home.
