Chapter 12 - The Name in the Medical File

The hospital that treated Richard had closed its old paper archive, but lawful requests could still retrieve records held by its successor.

Margaret explained that private medical information required careful handling even after death.

We could not search it simply because Vanessa mentioned it.

Instead, Richard's own papers contained a consent authorizing me to access his final treatment records.

Among them was a visitor log from his last hospitalization.

Martin appeared twice.

Vanessa appeared once, listed under her maiden name, Hart.

The visit took place months before she and Ethan announced their engagement.

I stared at the date until my eyes hurt.

Richard had never told me Vanessa visited him.

Perhaps he did not know who she was.

Perhaps she came with Martin.

Or perhaps he had warned her not to become involved.

I had spent years thinking Richard kept too many secrets.

Now the secrets looked less like games and more like unfinished attempts to keep an unstable world outside our door.

Graham recalled bringing Richard an envelope that day.

The envelope contained copies of correspondence showing Martin had been approaching Ethan with business proposals.

Richard asked his doctor to limit visitors after the meeting.

He also dictated a memorandum to Margaret.

We searched her archived files and found the note.

Richard wrote that a young woman working with Martin had demanded access to financial information in exchange for keeping a damaging allegation from Ethan.

Richard refused.

He described the allegation as false and advised that any further contact be handled through counsel.

The young woman was unnamed, but the date aligned with Vanessa's hospital visit.

I wanted to know what accusation Martin had held over Richard.

Margaret cautioned that the unverified allegation itself might be designed to spread through repetition.

We identified the subject by comparing the memo with older correspondence.

Martin had claimed Richard concealed a side agreement that entitled Martin to future appreciation of trust properties.

The executed settlement contradicted that claim.

Richard's ledger showed repayment and release.

The 'secret' was not infidelity or a hidden child.

It was an old financial dispute Martin had recast as a family betrayal, counting on his targets to protect Richard's reputation without checking the documents.

At the next discovery hearing, Adrian's counsel argued that the file histories were incomplete and requested permission to inspect originals.

The judge approved a controlled examination by independent experts.

Helen welcomed it.

She was tired of argument disguised as mystery.

The first forensic report identified differences between my known signatures and the disputed ones; the file metadata also showed editing at unusual hours.

The examiner avoided naming a perpetrator.

I appreciated the restraint.

I had learned how dangerous certainty could be when it arrived before evidence.

That evening, Ethan asked whether he could send me a letter.

I said yes.

It arrived as six handwritten pages.

He remembered small things: the scar on my thumb from repairing his Halloween costume, the rainstorm during his high-school graduation, Richard teaching us both to change a tire.

Then he admitted that after Richard died, he resented being left without direct control of the fortune.

He described the cottage arrangement as proof I had failed.

He confessed that Vanessa encouraged him to think my poverty justified his contempt.

I read the letter twice.

Remorse was beginning to sound possible.

Forgiveness did not yet.

Near midnight, Reyes called with a development.

Officers had located Vanessa at a hotel and confirmed she was unharmed.

She refused to explain the interrupted voicemail.

But she had handed them a sealed envelope addressed to me.

Inside was a photograph of a document bearing Martin's signature.

At the top were three words: CONFIDENTIAL SIDE AGREEMENT.

At the bottom was a second signature I recognized with a jolt.

It was not Richard's.

It was Ethan's, dated the year before he married Vanessa.

He had joined this plan long before he ever called me broke.
