CHAPTER 10: The Ghost of Zurich

The private VIP lounge at Logan International Airport’s international terminal smelled of expensive leather, stale espresso, and quiet panic.
Julian Vance paced across the plush imported wool rug, his tailored charcoal overcoat swinging with every agitated step. At fifty-two, Julian possessed all of Arthur’s sharp, predatory facial features, but without the softening weight of age or arrogance. His eyes were like chips of blue ice, darting constantly toward the private departure gates.
He pulled out his encrypted satellite phone and dialed a secure number.
"Talk to me," Julian snapped the moment the line connected.
"The federal magistrate locked down Arthur and Rebecca’s bail hearings an hour ago," a panicked voice replied from the Swiss end of the line. "The SEC has seized all domestic accounts. If you don't transfer the remaining liquidation reserves out of the Cayman trusts within the hour, the entire holding network will collapse."
"I am trying to move the funds now," Julian hissed, pressing his thumb frantically against the biometric scanner of his encrypted laptop resting on the marble bar.
Access Denied. Root Certificate Expired.
Julian cursed loudly, slamming his fist onto the marble counter. A nearby flight attendant turned her head, but looked away immediately under the razor-sharp glare of Julian’s eyes.
"What do you mean, certificate expired?" Julian barked into the phone. "I generated that encryption key last Tuesday!"
"You didn't generate it, Julian," a smooth, calm voice echoed from directly behind him.
Julian froze. Every muscle in his body locked up. He slowly turned around.
Standing ten feet away, leaning casually against a structural mahogany pillar, was Elena Rostova. She wore a simple beige trench coat, her hands tucked neatly into her pockets, her expression entirely unreadable. To her right stood Catherine, and behind them, blocking the glass exit doors toward the tarmac, stood two private security contractors in dark suits.
"You..." Julian breathed, his color draining as he stared at the woman he had only ever seen in grainy surveillance photos provided by David. "You're Elena Rostova. The mother-in-law."
"And you are Julian Vance," Elena replied, taking a slow, measured step forward. "The smart brother. The one who stayed hidden in Zurich while Arthur took all the legal risks. Tell me, Julian, how does it feel to watch forty years of family larceny evaporate because you trusted your nephew's sloppy digital hygiene?"
Julian forced a cold, arrogant smile to his lips, though his fingers trembled as they hovered over his laptop keyboard. "You're trespassing in a restricted VIP zone, Mrs. Rostova. Airport security will be here in thirty seconds. And whatever delusions you have about my family's assets, my accounts are protected by international banking treaties that a local mother from Boston can't touch."
"Treaties require legal entities to exist," Catherine said, stepping out from the shadows beside Elena. She held up a thin, official document bearing the gold seal of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission. "And as of 9:15 AM Zurich time, the Swiss courts declared the Julian-Arthur trust null and void due to fraudulent foundational declarations dating back to 1996."
Julian’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "That's... that's impossible. That archive was sealed by the magistrate!"
"Nothing is sealed when you leave your master decryption keys on a shared server in your nephew's basement," Elena said smoothly. She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, sleek flash drive, tossing it lightly into the air and catching it again. "David inherited your paranoia, Julian. And Maya inherited my patience."
Before Julian could lunge for his laptop to smash the hard drive against the marble floor, the private security contractors moved with lightning speed. One of them pinned Julian’s arms behind his back with practiced efficiency, while the other neatly snapped a pair of heavy zip-ties around his wrists.
"You can't do this!" Julian yelled, struggling fruitlessly against the grip as airport passengers began to stare in shock. "I am a Swiss citizen! I demand consular access!"
"You can discuss your consular access with the federal prosecutors waiting for you in the hangar downstairs," Elena said, walking past him toward the departure doors. She paused, looking back over her shoulder with a cold, piercing glance. "Welcome back to Boston, Julian. Enjoy your family reunion."
As Julian was dragged away toward the service elevator, his laptop remained unlocked on the marble counter. The screen flickered, automatically syncing with an external drive.

A single file flashed on the display—a file labeled The Final Beneficiary.
Neither Elena nor Catherine noticed it as they walked out of the lounge. But as the file auto-downloaded, it revealed a name that none of them expected. A name that proved the Vance family conspiracy went deeper than anyone had ever imagined.
