Chapter 6 - The Night They Came to the Motel

I moved to a different motel that evening.

Not because I wanted to run, but because I wanted to decide for myself when my son could reach me.

Elise contacted local authorities about the alleged assault and lockout and arranged for a victim advocate to speak with me.

The officer who took my new report was patient, but patience was not the same as belief.

He kept asking why I hadn't reported every injury when it happened.

“Because I thought I could persuade my son to stop,” I answered.

I hated how small the sentence sounded.

I'd spent my career telling people to document threats early, yet I had delayed because I loved the person making them.

That night, someone knocked on my new motel door at 11:42.

Three sharp knocks.

Then silence.

I checked the peephole.

Corinne stood alone in a cream-colored coat.

Her expression was wet-eyed and frightened.

“Quinn, please,” she said.

“I just want to talk.”

I kept the chain fastened and opened the door a fraction.

“You can talk from there.”

She glanced down the hallway.

“Nathan's losing control.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

I let the question hang.

For a moment, she looked less like the woman who had twisted my wrist and more like someone who had finally realized consequences were real.

Then she held out a small paper bag.

“Your medicine.”

I hadn't asked her for it.

My prescriptions were still inside the house, but I had obtained replacement supplies with help from my doctor.

I looked at the bag without touching it.

“Why bring it now?”

“Because I don't want you getting hurt.”

I almost laughed at the cruelty of it.

“You've photographed me every time I was hurt.”

She flinched.

“There's a difference between taking pictures and causing injuries.”

“Tell that to my wrist.”

The tears vanished.

“You have no idea how much trouble you're making.”

That was Corinne speaking honestly at last.

“Then tell Nathan to stop filing lies under oath.”

She stepped closer and lowered her voice.

“If you play that recording, you'll ruin more than your son.”

I froze.

I had never told Nathan about the backup.

Corinne watched my face and knew she'd made a mistake.

From somewhere outside, a car door shut.

She turned and walked away fast.

I closed the door and called Elise.

“Corinne knows I still have it,” I said.

Elise told me not to open the door again and to write down the encounter immediately.

I did.

But my hand slowed when I reached the last line.

May you like

Because I suddenly understood that Nathan wasn't the only person frightened of whatever I'd recorded in Hal's study.
