CHAPTER 13 — THE SISTER WHO LIED

Vanessa denied signing the statement.

The signature looked identical to hers.

The document was notarized.

A video attached to the court filing showed Vanessa sitting in Richard’s study.

On-screen, she stated that I had manipulated Margaret, stolen company documents, and planned to frame Richard.

The recording had been made six months earlier.

“I was forced,” Vanessa said.

“Did he have a gun?”

“No.”

“Was Mom tied up in the next room?”

Vanessa looked away.

“No.”

“Then why did you say those things?”

“Because he promised to release Laura.”

Laura stood from the hospital chair.

“You knew I was alive six months ago?”

Vanessa began crying.

“I thought I could bargain with him.”

“You left me there for thirty-four years,” Laura said. “Then you used me as an excuse to betray Emily.”

Vanessa had no answer.

The emergency hearing took place two days later.

Richard remained missing.

His attorneys argued that Margaret was mentally unstable and that I had coerced her.

The courtroom was packed with reporters.

Margaret testified first.

She described years of financial control, intimidation, and forced medication.

Laura testified about her imprisonment.

Mr. Whitaker admitted accepting Richard’s payments but produced detailed records showing he had transferred the funds into a trust for victims of Vale Maritime’s fraud.

Then Vanessa took the stand.

Richard’s attorney played the video.

“Is that your voice?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Your face?”

“Yes.”

“Were you threatened at the moment of recording?”

“No.”

A murmur passed through the courtroom.

The attorney smiled.

“Then your sister did exactly what you accused her of doing.”

Vanessa looked toward me.

“No,” she said.

She reached inside her coat.

The bailiff moved forward.

Vanessa slowly removed a tiny memory card.

“I made that statement because my father demanded it. But I also recorded what he said afterward.”

The audio filled the courtroom.

Richard’s voice was unmistakable.

Once Emily is blamed, Margaret will be declared incompetent. Laura will disappear permanently. Then the company becomes ours.

Vanessa’s voice asked, “Ours?”

Richard laughed.

“Mine. You were never smart enough to own anything.”

The judge denied the petition and released the inheritance.

He also issued warrants for everyone named in Richard’s network.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded us.

For the first time, Vanessa stood beside me instead of against me.

Then a shot cracked through the crowd.

Vanessa jerked backward.

Blood appeared across her white blouse.

I caught her before she hit the ground.

Across the street, a man lowered a rifle.

It was Richard.

And this time, he was not running.

He was walking directly toward me.
