Chapter 18 - The Temporary Order

The hearing room was smaller than I'd imagined.

There was no jury and no dramatic audience, only lawyers, caseworkers, parents, and a judge responsible for making a difficult safety decision.

Rebecca reminded me that this was about Paige's care, not vindicating me.

I held on to that distinction as Kate entered through the side door.

She sat beside her lawyer and never looked at Ryan.

Ryan's lawyer argued that the state had reacted too aggressively and that Paige belonged with her parents.

The county described the medical concerns, delayed care, attempts to conceal the injury, and conflicting statements.

The judge asked pointed questions about safe contact and the availability of family placement.

My name came up.

Ryan turned toward me with a look I would never forget.

It was not rage.

It was disbelief that the person he'd chosen as a convenient scapegoat might become the one who protected Paige.

The judge authorized temporary placement with me subject to continued supervision and regular review.

Approved parent-child contact would follow the safety plan.

The order was not permanent custody and it did not settle criminal responsibility.

It did something more immediate.

It gave Paige a safe room and someone who would take her pain seriously.

I collected her that afternoon with Monica present.

She wore a soft lavender outfit supplied by her foster caregiver.

Her leg was healing under the orthopedic team's guidance, and her medical follow-up was scheduled.

I thanked the foster family for caring for her through the worst days.

Then I carried her into my apartment.

The night-light glowed above the crib.

The yellow rabbit waited on a shelf where she could see it but could not pull it into her sleep space.

I set Paige down carefully and watched her stretch her uninjured leg.

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she smiled.

It was a tiny, uncertain smile.

I had never been so grateful for anything.

An hour later, someone knocked.

I checked the camera before opening the door.

My mother stood outside holding a wrapped gift.

Beside her was Kate.

May you like

Neither had been authorized to visit.
