Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

We stopped calling it a family dispute in our legal filings.
We called each transaction by its date, amount, account, and supporting document.
Maya submitted the original binder, the altered versions, the template history, and Andrea's preserved instructions.
The independent accounting team prepared a report separating verified foundation expenses from unsupported charges.
The foundation's legitimate board met with a quorum and voted to strengthen approval controls immediately.
They also appointed an independent review committee.
I recused myself from decisions involving my own family where appropriate.
It hurt to surrender even a small measure of control over an organization I had built.
But that was exactly how I would prove it deserved to survive beyond me.
Leah informed affected recipients that the fraudulent repayment demands were being addressed and that our grant terms remained unchanged.
We arranged assistance for anyone who had sent money to the false account.
The bank continued its recovery and fraud review.
Our attorney provided the relevant records to appropriate authorities through established channels.
No dramatic raid occurred.
No one was handcuffed in the ballroom where the scandal began.
Instead there were calls, preservation notices, interviews, financial reconciliations, and long evenings spent confirming facts.
The slow work was less theatrical than revenge.
It was also much harder to escape.
Eric asked to meet me at a neutral café.
Maya advised caution, and I agreed to see him only in a public place.
He looked exhausted.
"Richard said the money would be temporary," he told me.
"Did he tell you why we needed a fake resolution?"
Eric stared into his coffee.
"He told me you would never approve it."
"Because I wouldn't."
"I know."
For the first time, he did not offer an excuse.
He admitted he had approved payments that should never have passed through him alone.
He described the affair as a personal mistake rather than part of the financial plan.
I did not believe those two parts could be separated so neatly.
He had known Natalie was helping Richard distract me.
He claimed he did not understand the full scope until the anniversary party.
"Then give your lawyer the documents and cooperate," I said.
"Richard says he'll ruin me."
"He's already helped you ruin yourself."
Eric flinched.
Before leaving, he warned me that Richard had a second set of books.
A set even Sophie had never seen.
According to Eric, the records were stored under a project name: BLACKWATER.
Maya began searching for a lawful way to obtain them.
The next morning, Celeste returned to our office.
She looked directly at me and said, "My husband told me what to say outside the courthouse. I was afraid."
Then she placed a sealed storage receipt on the table.
The unit number was handwritten beside one word.
May you like
BLACKWATER.
