Chapter 3 — The Inheritance No One Expected
Arthur accepted the microphone.
His voice was quiet.
But every word carried through the ballroom.
"Three years ago, I transferred my penthouse to Rebecca because she was the only member of this family who never asked me for anything."
He paused.
"She visited because she loved me."
His eyes shifted toward Nathan.
"You visited when you needed money."
Nathan lowered his head.
Arthur continued.
"I instructed my attorneys to prepare another document."
The ballroom doors opened once more.
Two attorneys entered carrying sealed folders.
One placed a thick envelope into Arthur's hands.
He removed several pages.
"This is my final amendment."
Caroline suddenly stepped forward.
"Dad... please..."
Arthur ignored her.
"My daughter Caroline Bennett..."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"...is permanently removed from every position within the Bennett Family Trust."
A wave of disbelief swept across the ballroom.
Arthur continued reading.
"Nathan Bennett receives only a modest educational trust that cannot be sold, borrowed against, or transferred."
Nathan's knees nearly gave way.
"And Rebecca Bennett..."
He smiled for the first time that evening.
"...becomes the sole chairperson of the Bennett Foundation and the primary heir to every remaining personal asset under my estate."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The inheritance everyone had spent years fighting over...
Had already been decided.
Arthur folded the papers.
"I wanted tonight to reveal character."
"It did."
Several guests quietly applauded.
The applause spread across the ballroom.
Not for wealth.
Not for power.
But for justice.
Meanwhile...

Caroline stood frozen.
Everything she had manipulated for decades had vanished in less than ten minutes.
