Chapter 11 - What Margaret Knew

I watched the video three times before speaking.

My mother had aged since then, but nothing could disguise the tilt of her chin or the careful way she folded her handbag strap.

Agent Harris asked me to identify the person without prompting.

"Margaret Carter," I said.

"My mother."

The identification felt like signing a final separation agreement.

Harris explained that investigators still needed original records and corroboration.

She warned me against confronting Mom over the video.

On the drive home I pulled into a rest stop because my hands were shaking too badly to hold the wheel.

My phone rang.

Mom.

I let it ring out.

Then she sent a message.

I never wanted any of this.

I stared at the words for a long time.

Finally I typed, Then tell the truth to the investigators.

She answered five minutes later.

Robert says they'll put us both in prison.

I did not promise to protect her.

I wrote, Get a lawyer and tell them what happened.

When she called again, I answered.

For the first time I heard no theatrical tears, only a tired woman who knew the walls were closing in.

She said Dad had convinced her the account was necessary to borrow against the trust while I was incapacitated.

He assured her no money would ever be taken from me.

Later she discovered payments moving through Harbor Crest and wanted to stop.

"Why didn't you?" I asked.

"Because Daniel had pictures, Evelyn."

"Pictures of what?"

Her breathing became thin.

"Your father meeting Lena before the fire."

I gripped the phone.

"That doesn't explain forging my identity."

"No," she whispered.

"It doesn't."

She said Daniel Price had controlled the records for years, and every attempt to leave the arrangement brought new threats.

I told her to bring that account to the authorities through her lawyer.

She asked whether I would forgive her.

I looked at the faded photograph of Grandpa on my mantel.

"I don't know."

The line went quiet.

Then she whispered something I couldn't immediately process.

"Robert wasn't the only one who knew the fire was coming."

Before I could ask what she meant, a man's voice sounded behind her.

"Margaret, put the phone down."

May you like

The call ended.
