Chapter 15 - A Dangerous False Victory

For several weeks, the legal threats quieted.

The forged consulting claim faced serious challenges.

The crowdfunding page was gone.

Grant's lenders were pursuing their own remedies, and my father had stopped calling.

I almost believed the worst was over.

At the foundation's first road-safety event, children in reflective vests practiced crossing a temporary street painted on the school playground.

Teachers helped them look left, right, and left again.

One little girl with dark braids raised her hand and asked whether the event was named after real children.

I knelt beside her.

"Yes. My Lily and Noah."

"Were they nice?"

I smiled through tears.

"They were wonderful."

She nodded solemnly and ran back to her class.

For a few minutes, I felt something like peace.

Then Margaret's phone rang.

She listened, color draining from her face.

"Thomas has been taken to the hospital."

We rushed there together.

He had experienced chest pain but was stable and receiving care.

When he saw us, he tried to make a joke.

"Too many terrible news stories for an old man's heart."

I held his hand and told him never to scare us again.

Outside the room Margaret showed me the message he had received just before the symptoms began.

It was an anonymous threat claiming the Miller family would be publicly accused of stealing the settlement.

Someone had included a photograph taken through their front window.

My fear sharpened into anger.

Daniel contacted law enforcement and urged us to improve security.

We couldn't prove who sent it.

But the photograph showed someone had gone close to Thomas and Margaret's home.

That night, a reporter called to say she had received documents alleging financial misconduct at the new foundation.

The files purported to show transfers to me and the Millers.

I knew the records were false because the transactions they described had never occurred.

Our accounts had independent oversight and documented approval processes.

Daniel arranged for the finance specialist and outside auditor to review the allegations.

By morning a sensational headline was circulating.

WIDOW'S CHARITY FACES QUESTIONS OVER MILLIONS.

My parents hadn't succeeded in taking the money.

Now someone was trying to destroy the one thing it was meant to build.
