Chapter 4 - Thirty-Seven Minutes Before Midnight

I did not sleep that morning.
There was nowhere inside me quiet enough for sleep to enter.
Lily's procedure began shortly after four.
Daniel sat three chairs away from me in the pediatric intensive care waiting room.
Rachel sat between us without pretending the distance was accidental.
Detective Reed left the hospital to coordinate the search of Patricia's car.
Patricia herself remained at the police station.
No one would tell me whether she had been arrested.
The uncertainty should have made me anxious.
Instead, I felt relief every minute she was not in the same building.
At 5:12, Daniel finally spoke.
"I should have told you about the house."
I looked at him.
"That is what you want to discuss right now?"
"No."
He rubbed both palms over his knees.
"I do not know where to start."
Rachel stared straight ahead.
"Start with the truth."
Daniel ignored her.
"When we refinanced, the bank would not approve the amount we needed without another signer."
"So your mother became co-owner."
"Temporarily."
"You keep saying that word as if it changes the deed."
"I planned to refinance again after your maternity leave."
"Why did you lie to me?"
"I did not lie."
Rachel turned toward him.
"You told her something false because the truth would have caused an argument."
Daniel's face tightened.
"That is called lying."
He looked at me.
"Mom said you would panic if you knew."
I laughed without humor.
"Of course she did."
"I thought I was avoiding stress while you were pregnant."
"You gave the woman who wanted me out of the house legal ownership of the house."
"She did not want you out then."
Rachel spoke quietly.
"Yes, she did."
Daniel looked at her.
Rachel's eyes stayed on him.
"She told me before the wedding that Emily would eventually leave because she was too independent for this family."
I stared at her.
"She said that?"
"Yes."
"And you still came to the wedding smiling."
Rachel flinched.
"I was twenty-four and still terrified of her."
I wanted to be angry at everyone.
I was too tired to decide where to put it.
At 5:41, Dr. Patel returned.
We all stood at once.
"The pressure monitor is in place."
I held my breath.
"The numbers are high, but they are responding to treatment right now."
"Does she need surgery?"
"Not at this moment."
The relief was so intense it hurt.
"Can I see her?"
"Soon."
Daniel asked the question I could not.
"Will she have brain damage?"
Dr. Patel paused.
"There is a real risk of long-term injury."
Daniel sat down as though someone had pushed him.
Dr. Patel continued carefully.
"It is too early to know the extent."
I nodded.
I refused to let the word damage become Lily's future before Lily had the chance to define it herself.
After the doctor left, Daniel began to cry.
Rachel moved toward him, then stopped halfway.
He looked at me through his hands.
"I am sorry."
I did not answer.
"Emily, I am so sorry."
"For which part?"
His hands lowered.
The question hurt him because he had too many choices.
The house.
The camera.
The private conversations he shared with Patricia.
The threat he dismissed.
The minute he wasted after Lily fell.
The sound he withheld from police.
He stared at me and said nothing.
"That is what I thought."
Detective Reed returned at 6:20.
He asked Daniel and Rachel to wait outside while he spoke to me.
I knew immediately that he had found something.
"Was the case in her car?"
"Yes."
My pulse accelerated.
"What was inside?"
"The missing USB drive."
I closed my eyes.
"And the camera card?"
"Also inside."
For the first time all night, a piece of the truth had physically reappeared.
"Then you have the video."
Detective Reed did not smile.
"Maybe."
"What does maybe mean?"
"The card appears to have been reformatted."
My relief vanished.
"She erased it."
"We do not know who reformatted it yet."
"It was in her car."
"That matters, but I need to be precise."
I hated precision in that moment.
I wanted certainty.
I wanted handcuffs.
I wanted someone to point at Patricia and say that every lie had failed.
Detective Reed continued.
"The USB drive is readable."
"What is on it?"
"A large number of audio files."
"Her arguments with Thomas?"
"Some appear to be."
"Some?"
He pulled his notebook from his pocket.
"There are more recent recordings too."
My stomach tightened.
"How recent?"
"Within the last month."
I stared at him.
"Recordings of what?"
"We are still cataloging them."
"Detective."
He studied my face before answering.
"One file appears to contain a conversation between Patricia and Daniel."
My heartbeat seemed to stop.
"About me?"
"Yes."
The waiting room suddenly felt too small.
"When?"
"Eight days ago."
"What did they say?"
"I have heard only a portion."
"What did they say?"
Detective Reed took a slow breath.
"Patricia told Daniel that you were making him weak."
I said nothing.
"She told him you needed to learn that the house belonged to the Miller family before it belonged to you."
My hands curled into fists.
"And Daniel?"
"He told her to stop interfering."
Relief flickered for one second.
Then Detective Reed continued.
"After that, she asked him what he would do if you refused to follow her rules."
"What did he say?"
Detective Reed looked toward the door.
"He said he would handle you."
I felt cold all the way through.
"What does that mean?"
"I do not know."
"Did he threaten me?"
"Not in the portion I heard."
"Then why are you telling me this now?"
His expression softened slightly.
"Because you are deciding where you will go when you leave this hospital."
I understood.
"You do not think I should go home with him."
"I think you should make that decision with all the information available."
The door opened before I could answer.
Daniel stepped inside.
"They said Lily is stable enough for Emily to visit."
His voice was gentle.
For years, that voice had meant safety to me.
Now I heard the recording inside it.
I will handle her.
Daniel looked at Detective Reed.
"Did you find the drive?"
"Yes."
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
"What is on it?"
Detective Reed watched him carefully.
"You tell me."
Daniel went still.
"I have no idea."
"There is a recording of you and your mother from eight days ago."
Daniel's eyes moved toward me.
"Emily."
"Do not."
"You need context."
The words came too quickly.
Detective Reed's expression sharpened.
"So you do know which conversation I mean."
Daniel realized the mistake immediately.
"I mean if there is a recording, then there would be context."
Rachel entered behind him.
"He is lying."
Daniel turned.
"Stay out of this."
"No."
She looked at Detective Reed.
"Ask him what Mom wanted him to do with Emily's phone."
I stared at her.
"My phone?"
Daniel's face went white.
Detective Reed opened his notebook again.
"What did Patricia want him to do?"
Rachel never looked away from her brother.
"She wanted him to copy Emily's messages while she was sleeping."
My stomach dropped.
"Why?"
Rachel answered softly.
"Because Mom said she needed proof that Emily was unstable before Emily tried to take Lily away from the family."
I turned toward Daniel.
"Did you do it?"
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was answer enough.
I took one step backward.
"You went through my phone."
"Emily, I can explain."
"You copied my private messages for your mother."
"I did not give her everything."
The sentence destroyed whatever defense he thought he had.
Rachel whispered a curse under her breath.
Detective Reed looked at Daniel with sudden focus.
"When did this happen?"
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Why?"
"My mother kept saying Emily was going to leave with Lily."
"Were you concerned she would?"
Daniel looked at me.
"We had been arguing."
I could barely hear him over the pounding in my ears.
"About your mother."
"Yes."
"Because I wanted her out of our house."
"Yes."
"And instead of asking her to leave, you searched my phone."
"I panicked."
I laughed once.
"You always panic in your mother's direction."
Daniel flinched.
Detective Reed asked what he had copied.
"Screenshots."
"Of what?"
"Messages between Emily and her sister."
I knew exactly which ones.
I had told my sister Claire that I could not keep living with Patricia.
I had written that if Daniel did not make her leave, I might take Lily and stay with Claire for a while.
There was nothing unstable about it.
There was nothing threatening about it.
But in Patricia's hands, a temporary escape could become a kidnapping plan.
A tired confession could become mental illness.
A boundary could become betrayal.
"Where are the screenshots now?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
"I sent them to Mom."
Detective Reed's pen stopped.
"By text?"
"Email."
"From your account?"
"Yes."
"Do not delete anything."
Daniel nodded.
I felt more betrayed than angry.
Anger would come later.
For now, I only felt the hollow place where trust had been.
A nurse appeared in the doorway.
"Mrs. Miller, you can see Lily now."
I walked past Daniel without touching him.
He started to follow.
I turned.
"No."
His face crumpled.
"Emily, she is my daughter."
"Then start acting like her father."
I entered the intensive care unit alone.
Lily was still unconscious.
I sat beside her crib and put my finger beneath her tiny palm.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then her fingers moved.
Barely.
A tiny curl around the tip of my finger.
I stopped breathing.
"Lily?"
A nurse leaned closer.
"That can be reflexive."
I did not care.
I bent until my forehead almost touched the crib rail.
"I am here."
My phone vibrated in my pocket.
I ignored it.
It vibrated again.
Finally, I looked.
An unknown number had sent me a photograph.
The image showed Patricia standing in my basement two nights earlier.
She was facing the hidden box.
The photograph appeared to have been taken from inside my own house.
May you like
Beneath it was one sentence.
She has been preparing for this longer than you know.
