Chapter 18 - The Point of No Return

Dana insisted the envelope be recorded and reviewed in the presence of counsel.

My father smiled as though he had expected her caution.

Inside was a copy of a letter Samuel had sent to an independent auditor shortly before his death.

It questioned transactions authorized by a second signatory: my mother.

The letter did not absolve my father.

It suggested that the diversion of money had begun as a joint scheme, with separate accounts and decisions.

Mother had spent weeks preparing to present herself as a reluctant accomplice.

Now evidence indicated she had personally directed some transfers and paid intermediaries.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness that the people who taught me to ride a bicycle and read aloud had spent years treating honesty as a threat.

My father said Mother would destroy us all rather than admit what she had done.

I asked whether he intended to cooperate fully with investigators.

His gaze dropped to the documents.

For the first time, he said, 'I need to speak to my lawyer.'

The meeting ended without a signed comprehensive agreement.

Outside, Dana told me that any resolution would have to withstand the full documentary record.

There would be no family shortcut around accountability.

I drove to the cabin alone after securing childcare with a trusted friend.

The lake was quiet under a pale winter sky.

I sat in Samuel's chair and read the letter he had written to a future child.

He had begun it before Maisie was born.

'Dear little one,' it said, 'I hope the world is kinder to you than the world we made.'

He described fishing at dawn, the smell of cedar, and the pleasure of teaching someone to plant tomatoes.

Not once did he mention money.

I understood that the trust had been a tool, not the purpose.

He wanted a place where a child would be safe from the whims of powerful adults.

At dusk Alice joined me after I invited her.

We talked about the future: what to tell Maisie, how to honor her attachment to us both, and how to let her choose what she wanted to call Alice.

We agreed that none of this was a path back to our old romance simply because we shared a child.

We would build a truthful relationship one decision at a time.

On the drive home Dana called.

The authorities had requested preservation of additional materials, and both my parents had received formal notices concerning the investigation.

Then she told me the last part.

My mother had submitted a sworn statement that contradicted her earlier account.

She now claimed that Alice had approached her first, offering Maisie in exchange for money.

Alice was sitting beside me and heard every word.

May you like

She whispered, 'I can prove that's impossible.'
