Chapter 16 - The Clue We Misread

The blue folder had bothered me since the night Martin asked about the wall safe.
We assumed it contained money or documents he wanted to steal.
Now Mom remembered seeing Ellis carry a blue binder into the house during a fundraising planning meeting.
Martin had taken it upstairs afterward.
That didn't authorize us to search his room.
Instead we told the investigator what Mom had witnessed and left the next steps to lawful process.
Several days later Sloan received copies of records produced through the inquiry.
Among them was a scanned page from a blue binder.
The folder wasn't a list of donors.
It was a record of reimbursements paid to speakers and event organizers.
One entry described an “honorarium” that Martin had claimed was a donation to veterans.
Another payment had been routed through an account associated with Ellis.
There were discrepancies requiring explanation, not yet proven crimes.
But one handwritten annotation stood out.
M.
HALE — USE BENNETT ADDRESS AFTER APPROVAL.
Mom looked at the note and frowned.
“I thought they wanted my house because it was valuable.”
“That may be part of it,” I said.
“But the address gives the organization a respectable local contact.”
Her name, home, and reputation had been the collateral long before anyone applied for a loan.
That realization changed the story.
Martin hadn't singled her out only because he needed cash.
He had found someone trustworthy whose credibility he could borrow.
The same pattern he'd used with military photographs.
Sloan helped Mom prepare corrected notices to the organizations where her name had appeared.
She also advised the affected donors to seek independent information about their contributions.
No public shaming campaign.
No anonymous threats.
Just records and clear statements.
Then Ward called with a fact that made my breath catch.
Elena Ortega had recognized an item in one of Martin's online photographs.
It was a presentation plaque engraved with her husband's name.

She hadn't seen it since the memorial event where it had gone missing.
And the photograph placed the plaque inside Martin's storage unit.
