Chapter 8 - Melissa Grant

Calvin Mercer waited in the bank lobby with both hands resting on the silver handle of a cane he did not appear to need.
He looked exactly as Emily remembered him from the wedding, except older and less friendly.
Naomi spoke to him first.
"Mr. Mercer, I represent Emily Carter."
Calvin's gaze moved past Naomi to Emily.
"Daniel asked me to tell you this has gone too far."
Emily nearly laughed.
"He forged my name on a three-hundred-thousand-dollar credit line."
Calvin's expression did not change.
"I would be careful using words like forged."
Naomi stepped between them slightly.
"Then perhaps you would like to explain why your notary seal appears on documents my client says she never signed."
For the first time, Calvin blinked too slowly.
"I notarize many documents."
"Do you remember notarizing a durable power of attorney for Emily Carter on March fourteenth?"
"I do not discuss private client matters in a bank lobby."
"Good."
Naomi handed him a business card.
"You can discuss them with investigators instead."
Calvin ignored the card.
His eyes stayed on Emily.
"Daniel is worried about you."
Emily felt rage rise again.
"Stop saying that."
"Excuse me?"
"Everyone who is stealing from me keeps saying they are worried about me."
Calvin's mouth tightened.
"You are emotional."
Naomi gave a humorless smile.
"That word is doing an extraordinary amount of work for your side, Mr. Mercer."
Calvin looked toward the security desk.
"I came to deliver a message."
Emily held up her phone.
"Then deliver one back."
Naomi glanced at her but did not stop her.
"Tell Daniel I know about Melissa Grant."
Calvin's face changed.
It lasted less than a second.
But Emily saw it.
So did Naomi.
Calvin recovered.
"I don't know that name."
Emily stepped closer.
"Then why did you react?"
"I didn't."
"You did."
"Pregnancy is making you imagine things."
Emily almost smiled.
It was astonishing how quickly they returned to the same script.
Naomi raised her phone.
"This conversation is over."
Calvin turned to leave.
Emily spoke before he reached the door.
"My father recorded you too, didn't he?"
Calvin stopped.
He did not turn around.
Emily had guessed.
His stillness answered more than words could.
Then he walked out.
Naomi looked at Emily.
"What do you mean, recorded him too?"
"I don't know."
"Emily."
"I wanted to see what he would do."
Naomi exhaled.
"Please warn me before improvising with possible co-conspirators."
Rachel whispered,
"It worked."
Naomi gave her a look.
"That is not helping."
They left for the courthouse with the safe-deposit materials secured in Naomi's bag.
The emergency review began at 9:14 a.m.
Daniel sat at the opposite table in a navy suit.
Margaret sat directly behind him.
The bruise on Emily's cheek was still visible.
Margaret looked at it once and then looked away.
Daniel's attorney, Victor Hale, began by describing Daniel as a frightened husband facing a sudden and inexplicable behavioral change in his pregnant wife.
He spoke about Emily leaving the marital residence.
He spoke about her refusing to disclose her location.
He spoke about her emotional volatility.
Then he introduced the disputed power of attorney as evidence that Daniel had long been entrusted with Emily's affairs.
Naomi stood.
"Your Honor, that document is the subject of an active fraud investigation."
Victor turned.
"Counsel is making an accusation without a finding."
"I am stating a documented fact."
Naomi handed the clerk the bank fraud case confirmation.
Then Dr. Patel's letter.
Then the clinic access log.
Then the police report.
Then photographs of Emily's cheek.
The judge read silently.
Daniel did not look at Emily.
Margaret did.
Naomi played the hallway camera clip.
Margaret's recorded voice filled the courtroom.
"Once she leaves tonight, call your lawyer before she gets to Rachel's."
Then Daniel.
"What if she doesn't leave?"
Then Margaret.
"She will."
A few seconds later came the final sentence.
"I know exactly what will make her walk out."
The room became silent.
Victor Hale asked for a recess.
The judge refused.
Naomi played the second clip showing Daniel asking where Emily was going and Emily clearly answering, "My sister's."
Then she showed the text Daniel sent hours later claiming he needed to know where she was.
The judge looked directly at Daniel.
"Mr. Carter, did you know your wife intended to stay with her sister?"
Daniel glanced at Victor.
Victor whispered something.
Daniel answered.
"I knew she said that."
"Does she have more than one sister?"
"No."
"Do you know where that sister lives?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Yes."
The judge's expression hardened.
"Then your emergency filing stating that your pregnant wife had disappeared to an unknown location was inaccurate."
Daniel shifted in his seat.
"I was scared."
Emily watched Margaret lean forward slightly behind him.
Daniel continued.
"Emily has not been herself."
Naomi objected to the vague characterization.
The judge allowed Daniel to explain.
He described crying spells.
He described arguments.
He described Emily accusing Margaret of entering rooms without permission.
Naomi then played the clip of Margaret entering the bedroom and opening the drawer.
Daniel's face lost color.
For the first time since Emily entered the courtroom, she felt the balance shift.
The judge denied emergency intervention.
He ordered that no party rely on the disputed powers of attorney until authenticity was resolved.
He also ordered both sides not to remove, destroy, or alter financial, medical, digital, or property records.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"If I learn that false statements were knowingly made in this court, there will be consequences."
Daniel nodded.
Margaret's expression did not move.
Outside the courtroom, Victor pulled Daniel into a conference room.
Margaret walked toward the elevator alone.
Emily had no intention of speaking to her.
Margaret spoke first.
"You think you won something."
Naomi moved between them.
"Do not address my client."
Margaret ignored her.
Her eyes stayed on Emily.
"You have no idea what your father did."
Emily stopped.
Naomi touched her arm.
"Keep walking."
Margaret smiled faintly.
"Ask Peter why your father was so afraid of Daniel."
Emily turned despite Naomi's warning.
"What are you talking about?"
Margaret's smile disappeared.
"Ask him who Daniel was before you met him."
The elevator doors opened.
Margaret stepped inside.
"Mom," Daniel called from down the hall.
Margaret pressed the lobby button.
The doors closed before Daniel reached her.
Emily looked at Naomi.
"Was that just meant to scare me?"
"Probably."
"Probably?"
Naomi sighed.
"We verify."
They went directly to Peter Sloan's office.
Peter listened to Margaret's words without interrupting.
Then he removed his glasses.
"Your father asked me not to tell you this unless he had evidence."
Emily's heartbeat accelerated.
"Evidence of what?"
Peter looked toward the window.
"Daniel did not meet you by accident."
Rachel went still.
Emily felt something cold move through her chest.
"What does that mean?"
Peter opened a locked file drawer.
He removed a thin folder.
Inside was a photocopy of a guest list from a charity gala held six years earlier.
Emily had attended with Rachel.
Daniel had introduced himself near the bar after accidentally spilling club soda on Emily's sleeve.
It had become a family story.
The clumsy beginning of a romance.
Peter slid another page across the desk.
It was an email from Daniel to a friend dated six weeks before the gala.
Emily read the first line.
The Carter daughter will be at the Winston Foundation event in October.
Her breath stopped.
The next line was worse.
If her father's company sale closed where I heard it did, she is worth getting to know.
Emily stared at the page until the words doubled.
Rachel whispered,
"He targeted you."
Peter did not soften it.
"Your father believed that was possible."
Emily's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
During a recess at the courthouse, Emily sat in a quiet stairwell with Rachel while Naomi spoke to the clerk.
Emily's hands would not stop shaking.
"I thought hearing that video in court would make me feel stronger."
Rachel sat one step below her.
"What did it make you feel?"
"Exposed."
Hearing Margaret's voice fill a public room had been different from hearing it in the car.
The private humiliation became evidence strangers could evaluate.
Emily understood why people sometimes stayed silent even when records existed.
Truth did not always feel empowering while it was being revealed.
Sometimes it felt like surrendering the last private version of your pain.
Rachel leaned back against the railing.
"You can hate this and still need it."
Emily nodded.
When they returned to the courtroom, she stopped watching Daniel for reactions.
She watched the judge instead.
That small choice mattered.
For months, Emily had measured reality by Daniel's face.
If he looked annoyed, maybe she was unreasonable.
If he looked calm, maybe nothing serious happened.
If he sighed, maybe she was creating drama.
Now someone outside the marriage was reading the facts without Daniel controlling the emotional temperature.
Emily did not need his expression to tell her what was true.
A new photograph appeared.
Melissa Grant sat in a parked car, crying.
The message below it read,
SHE WANTS OUT.
Then a second message arrived.
