Chapter 17 - The Meeting Edgar Wanted

Heather said no before Nora finished explaining.
"Caleb is not going anywhere near him."
"I agree."
Heather blinked.
"Then what meeting are we giving him?"
"The one he thinks he's getting."
Reyes did not like the plan either.
She liked Edgar controlling the terms even less.
The objective was simple.
Heather would tell Edgar she was willing to bring Caleb if Edgar proved he had the offshore ledger.
She would insist on seeing it first.
Police would choose the safest possible interpretation of any meeting location and control as much of the environment as they could.
Caleb would never be present.
No one would tell Edgar that.
Heather sat in an interview room with a recording device running and called the number Edgar had provided through an encrypted messaging app.
He answered after one ring.
"Where's Caleb?"
Heather's face tightened.
"Safe."
"I asked where he is."
"You don't get to ask me that right now."
Edgar exhaled angrily.
"Heather, don't start."
Nora watched from the adjoining room.
The phrase was familiar.
Don't start.
Edgar used it whenever a woman objected to the situation he had created.
Heather continued.
"You said you wanted to see him."
"I do."
"Then prove you're not setting me up again."
Silence.
"What are you talking about?"
"The financial-crimes arrest."
"That was Thomas."
"You told me the accounts were clean."
"They were supposed to be."
Nora looked at Reyes.
That admission mattered.
Heather pushed.
"You made me move money."
"I told you what to do."
"You didn't ask questions."
Heather's eyes filled with fury.
"You told me it was family money."
"It was going to be."
Nora almost laughed at the arrogance.
Stolen money would become family money once he controlled the company.
Heather asked about the ledger.
Edgar told her he had enough to destroy Thomas and protect himself.
"Protect yourself from what?"
"From Nora's version of this."
Heather looked through the one-way glass toward Nora.
"Did your mother put the snake in Nora's bed?"
Edgar went silent.
"Edgar?"
"Mom lost control."
"Did you know?"
"I knew she was angry."
"Did you drive her to the reptile place?"
Another silence.
"Thomas arranged access."
"That's not what I asked."
Edgar's voice became colder.
"Do you want Caleb to grow up with a father or not?"
Heather flinched.
Nora saw the old control return instantly.
Threat disguised as concern.
Heather looked at Reyes.
Reyes nodded for her to continue.
"Where do you want to meet?"
Edgar gave an address near Buckeye.
An abandoned produce distribution facility sat beside Interstate 10.
Police knew the property.
It had multiple buildings, open loading areas, and access roads in four directions.
Bad location.
Edgar knew enough to choose it.
"Tomorrow at six," he said.
Heather replied, "I want a picture of the ledger first."
"You'll see it there."
"Then I don't come."
Edgar cursed.
"You think you're in control now because Nora is paying for lawyers?"
Heather's face went white.
"Nora isn't paying my lawyer."
That was true.
"She will drop you the second she gets what she wants."
Heather looked toward Nora again.
"Maybe."
Nora respected the answer.
Heather owed her honesty, not loyalty.
"Send the picture," Heather said.
Edgar ended the call.
Seven minutes later an image arrived.
It showed three pages of the ledger beside that day's Arizona Republic newspaper.
The pages appeared original.
A forensic examiner enlarged the image.
Handwriting matched notes from Thomas's seized materials.
One page contained bank reference numbers not previously known to investigators.
The ledger was probably real.
The meeting moved forward.
No one slept much.
At 4:30 the next afternoon, surveillance teams began taking positions around the Buckeye facility.
Heather wore a concealed recorder and a tracking device.
She was driven in an ordinary SUV.
A child safety seat was visible in the back.
It was empty.
From a distance, Edgar would not know.
Nora was ordered to remain at a mobile command post more than a mile away.
She argued once.
Reyes refused.
Nora stopped arguing.
At 5:52 p.m., a dark pickup truck entered the property.
License plates had been stolen from another vehicle.
The driver remained inside for two minutes.
Then a man stepped out wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses.
Edgar.
Nora watched the drone feed on a monitor.
Her husband looked smaller from above.
For ten years he had occupied enormous space in her emotional life.
On the screen he was one moving figure in an empty parking lot.
Heather arrived at 6:01.
She parked thirty yards away.
Edgar walked toward her.
She did not get out.
He stopped at the driver's window.
"Where is he?"
Heather lowered the glass halfway.
"Show me the ledger."
"Where is Caleb?"
"Safe."
Edgar looked toward the back seat.
He saw the child seat.
"Get him out."
"Ledger first."
Edgar slammed one hand against the roof.
Nora flinched despite herself.
Heather did not.
"You think Nora is your friend now?" Edgar asked.
"No."
The answer confused him.
"Then what are you doing?"
"Trying to keep my son away from a man who used him as bait."
Edgar stepped back.
"I paid for everything you have."
"With her money."
"It was going to be mine."
Another admission.
At the command post, Daniel looked at Nora.
"He cannot help himself."
No.
Edgar had spent years believing ownership was only delayed recognition.
If Nora's company would eventually be his, stealing from it did not feel like theft.
If Heather would eventually be his partner, controlling her did not feel like abuse.
If Kristina would do anything for him, directing her anger did not feel like conspiracy.
Heather asked again for the ledger.
Edgar looked around the property.
He was checking for surveillance.
Police teams remained hidden.
He opened the pickup and removed a black envelope.
Heather extended her hand through the window.
Edgar did not give it to her.
"Call Caleb."
"No."
"I want to hear his voice."
"No."
Edgar's face changed.
The charming man disappeared.
"You don't get to keep my son from me."
Heather's voice shook, but she held eye contact.
"You kept him secret for four years."
"Because of Nora."
Nora felt the old reflex to blame herself arrive even now.
She crushed it immediately.
Heather did too.
"Nora didn't know he existed."
"She would have destroyed us."
"You told me she knew about us."
Edgar said nothing.
"You told me she refused to let you leave."
Silence.
"You told your mother Nora was going to take Caleb."
Edgar looked away.
Heather's voice hardened.
"You lied to all of us."
"I did what I had to do."
There it was.
The sentence Nora had been waiting to hear.
Not remorse.
Justification.
Heather lowered her voice.
"Did that include the snake?"
Edgar looked back at her.
"Mom wasn't supposed to get caught."
Every person monitoring the call became still.
Heather whispered, "So you knew."
Edgar realized the mistake immediately.
His eyes moved to Heather's collar.
Then to the dashboard.
He stepped backward.
"Take off your jacket."
Heather froze.
"What?"
"Take it off."
Reyes spoke into the tactical channel.
"Prepare to move."
Edgar reached through the half-open window and grabbed Heather's sleeve.
She jerked away and hit the lock.
The window began rising.
Edgar struck the glass with his palm.
Police vehicles surged from both sides of the facility.
Sirens erupted.
Edgar ran.
He did not return to the pickup.
He sprinted between two loading buildings toward the rear yard.
Officers followed.
A helicopter moved overhead.
Nora watched the drone feed as Edgar disappeared beneath a metal awning.
A camera on the far side caught him climbing through a broken fence into an adjacent equipment lot.
Then he vanished beneath rows of parked trailers.
Police sealed the perimeter.
For forty minutes they searched.
They found his sunglasses.
They found one shoe.
They found the black envelope containing the ledger pages.
They did not find Edgar.
Reyes's face was rigid when she returned to the command post.
"He had help."
"How?"
"There's a storm-drain access channel behind the equipment lot."
"He knew about it?"
"Looks like it."
Nora remembered who had spent years in logistics and industrial properties.
Thomas.
The location had not been random.
It was part of an old produce network Thomas once owned.
He would have known the drainage routes and service exits.
"Thomas gave him the location," Nora said.
Reyes nodded.
"Maybe before they turned on each other."
The recovered ledger was real.
It linked Thomas to Ventana Global and three other offshore accounts.
It documented payments to Michael, Bryce Nolan, and two board consultants.
It also showed payments to Edgar totaling 1.7 million dollars over four years.
Edgar had sold pieces of Nora's company for years before trying to inherit the rest.
At 9:18 p.m., police arrested Thomas Vale on financial-conspiracy and obstruction allegations while prosecutors reviewed broader charges.
At 10:02, Bryce Nolan was found at a motel in Casa Grande and taken into custody.
At 10:40, the board permanently removed Thomas from all company access.
By midnight, investigators had recovered almost seven million dollars in frozen domestic and offshore accounts.
Nora should have felt the walls closing around the conspiracy.
Instead she watched the security feed from her hotel hallway and wondered where Edgar was.
At 1:16 a.m., a package arrived at the front desk.
No return address.
Security isolated it before opening.
Inside was Nora's grandmother's wedding ring.
The ring that had been inside her office safe.
Nora stared at it through the evidence bag.
Only a handful of people knew the ring was there.
Edgar was one of them.
Attached to the ring was a handwritten note.
You always said this was the only thing money couldn't replace.
Below that was an address.
Nora recognized it immediately.
The first warehouse Preston Supply had ever rented.

And beneath the address Edgar had written four words.
Come hear the whole truth.
