Chapter 2: The Call That Stopped the Music
Chapter 2: The Call That Stopped the Music
My thumb hovered over a single name.
Richard Lawson.
I pressed Call.
He answered before the second ring.
"Emily?"
His calm voice contrasted sharply with the chaos surrounding me.
"I need you."
There was a brief silence.
Then he heard Mia crying.
"What happened?"
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
"Margaret assaulted Mia."
"David hit me."
"I want everything to end."
His voice hardened instantly.
"Stay where you are."
"I'm coming."
The call lasted less than twenty seconds.
Margaret laughed when she saw me put the phone away.
"Calling someone to rescue you?"
"You've always enjoyed making yourself the victim."
David folded his arms.
"You embarrassed my mother."
"You should apologize before this gets worse."
I looked at him as though he were a stranger.
"Worse?"
"You slapped your wife."
"You watched your mother attack your daughter."
"And you think I've embarrassed your family?"
His jaw tightened.
Guests shifted uncomfortably.
Several had quietly begun recording everything on their phones.
The ballroom doors suddenly opened.
Three black SUVs stopped outside the grand entrance.
Six men in dark suits entered first.
The conversations died instantly.
Then an older gentleman stepped inside.
Perfectly tailored charcoal suit.
Silver hair.
Sharp blue eyes.
Every employee at the venue immediately straightened.
The hotel manager hurried over.
"Mr. Lawson..."
Richard barely acknowledged him.
His eyes searched the room until they landed on Mia.
Still covered in food.
Still trembling in my arms.
He walked directly toward us.
Ignoring everyone else.
He removed his expensive suit jacket and gently wrapped it around Mia's shoulders.
His voice became impossibly soft.
"Sweetheart..."
"No child should ever be treated like this."
Mia looked up.
"Grandpa Richard..."
Margaret's face lost all color.
David blinked.
"...Grandpa?"
Richard slowly stood.
Then he turned toward Margaret.
"I warned you years ago."
"If you ever laid a hand on my granddaughter..."
"There would be consequences."
The ballroom exploded into whispers.
"What did he say?"
"Granddaughter?"
"I thought Emily's parents were dead."
Margaret's confident smile vanished.
"What... what are you talking about?"
Richard looked directly into her eyes.
"No."
"You simply never cared enough to ask who Emily really was."
He reached into his briefcase and removed a thick folder.
Inside were legal documents.
Photographs.
Birth certificates.
Adoption records.
"I have spent thirty-two years protecting my daughter's privacy."
"When Emily married your son, she asked me never to interfere."
"I honored her decision."
"I believed your family loved her."
He looked toward Mia.
"I was wrong."
Emily lowered her eyes.
The secret she had protected for years had finally come into the open.
Richard Lawson wasn't simply a successful businessman.
He was the founder of one of the largest private investment groups in the country.
And Emily...
...was his adopted daughter and sole legal heir.
David's face turned pale.
Margaret stumbled backward.
"No..."
"That isn't possible."
Richard closed the folder.
"It is."
"And your family just assaulted my daughter..."
"...and my granddaughter."
No one in the ballroom spoke.
The silence became unbearable.
Until flashing blue lights appeared through the ballroom windows.
Police officers entered.
Behind them came two detectives.
One walked directly toward Emily.
"Mrs. Carter?"
"We received a report of child assault and domestic violence."
Emily nodded once.
"Yes."
"I'd like to file charges."
David's confidence disappeared instantly.
"So... you're actually doing this?"
May you like
Emily met his eyes.
"I should have done it years ago."
